Time to get started on the binding. I bent the binding in my new side bender. That thing saves a lot of time. To bend binding by hand takes a very long time and if you get a little lazy, you'll break the binding and get to start over. The cutaway portion of the binding had to be done by hand. Bloodwood does not like to bend.
Liet's start on the back-

Time to bind the top.

This got a little interesting trying to get the binding to stay in place. The tape just wasn't strong enough. If you don't get the binding flush up to the sides, you either end up filling, which looks bad, or cutting it off and doing it again. The blood wood did not bend that great, but is sure looks good. The thin white wood is maple.

Steve,

the binding looks awesome. The white strip is a nice addition. It looks like a pain to get it to bend and stay...I guess that is why the finished product is so satisfying. Thanks for including us on your guitar building journey.

Looking great Steve? I didn't think you were a lefty, are you building it for someone?

My first guitar instruction went well. Joined the tops and backs for three guitars. Never expected candling to be so difficult to get perfect.
Next Tuesday I will rout and inlay my rosette and get the top & back laid out for bracing.

PS. Did you get the logo revise I sent you?

best wishes in your progress, I'll be watching

That is so cool. I'm so excited for you.
Yes, getting edges perfectly straight can be difficult. On this guitar, the top was pretty typical and took a bit of time. The back, with it's figured grain was very difficult. The grain would very in hardness. The different grains reacted different to the plane or sander. The soft grain was removed quicker than the harder grain. It was the most difficult job of candling I ever did.

Yes, thank you. I'll email you.

Saul,
I never had to pull out so many clamps before. Yes, it was a pain. But it turned out nice, no gaps.

Steve, I love how you are letting the beauty of the wood be the star by keeping the binding and trim very simple and elegant. (Of course Peter is thinking, "then why does he want so much bling on his guitar?". But I love it all! What can I say? )

Beautiful guitar, Steve.

I love the body shape with the florentine cutaway! The bloodwood appointments make a real nice contrast with the koa. No wonder George is getting a bit excited after seeing all these photos.

Question: Since it is a LEFTY— how do you feel about building a guitar that requires you to think in reverse, particularly when it comes to the set-up, checking intonation, action and playability? The builders with whom I've ordered custom lefties were both very accomodating and willing to create some really incredible guitars for me— yet were possibly a little frustrated at not being able to really 'test run' (i.e. "Play") these guitars before they left the shop. This is no reflection on the final product—to me, these guitars are fabulous—but if one is accustomed to a certain build process, having to 're-think' a number of the steps ("okay....top is now bottom, bottom is now top..") while building a lefty can be a challenge.

Kevin Gallagher told me he actually can play a little bit "left-handed" so for him, the set-up and action check were a minor issue on a lefty model. But I still wonder how builders feel about this whole backwards process....

It stinks and I'll never do it again.

Many builders charge extra because they know something(s) will have to be remade. I had to remake the bridge because I made it for a right handed guitar. No big deal, I'll probably be able to use it sometime later.
I chose to build another guitar at the same time just to help and be sure that I made things opposite. It got a little confusing when it came time to put the sides in the bender. Other than the bridge, it has not been a big deal. Action can be set up without playing, you just measure. Intonation can be easily checked also.

The worst part to me is that I'll never be able to fully test drive this guitar. I can strum a few chords and perhaps play it backwards a bit. I have loved playing each of the 4 guitars that I have made. It is such a thrill to put the strings on for the first time. The anticipating as you bring the string up to pitch is something I wish everyone could experience. There is nothing like it.

Steve, that's the exact same lament that John Osthoff made after he's built a couple lefties for me...

I guess I won't be putting in a request for your next one......

Beautiful guitar....even if it was (is) a pain to create!
