Default Building an all koa SJ.

My next build will be an all koa SJ.
The binding and rosette will be bloodwood with an ebony 24.9" scale fretboard and koa headplate.
This will be my first SJ and it will have a Florentine cutaway.

Here is a picture of the back, top and sides.
The back is the more figured set located at the bottom of the picture.

This could be addicting!

I thought I might start by making the bloodwood rosette. It broke at the top across the short grain. It will not be noticeable when glued in place.

Time to join the top. This is one of the hardest and important parts of building.
The two halves must be almost perfectly straight.
I start with a long piece of very flat and long extruded aluminum with adhesive backed sandpaper mounted to in.
I sand the edges flat. I do not ever join sanded edges because the surface is rough and torn.
I want a smooth cut edge, so I take the halves to my shooting board and take a few light passes with my low angle block plane.
I have the plane set up to take about a .003" cut.

After a few passes, I put the sides together as they will be bonded and I hold it up to a bright light.
I am looking to make the sides so straight that no light will pass through the joint.
This will take several attempts.
Each time I hold it to the light, it will reveal high and low places.
I'll make a mental note of these spots and take the set back to the shooting board for more passed with the plane.
If is is real bad, I'll take it back to the sanding step.

Once I have the joint perfect, I set up my joining board to bond the plates.
I use a .325" maple bar to set up a preload on the plates.
When I remove the maple bar and press the plates down, there will be plenty of compression on the entire joint for proper bonding.
I place wax paper under the joint.

I apply adhesive and spread it out evenly.

I put the halves together, remove the maple bar and press the plates down on the board.

Next I put was paper over the glue joint and make sure the halves are aligned, flat and level.
I have a warped piece or EI rosewood that I use to clamp the center seam.

I place a bag of shot on the seam and let it cure for 24 hours.

Steve, interesting pictorial here. Just curious, I see you sand and then plane the edges of the top. Is this because you don't have a jointer or is there some reason a jointer wouldn't work in this application?

Sorry, too much "New Yankee Workshop"

I own a jointer. These plates are too thin, too delicate, and too expensive to be used on a jointer. Many have tried, few have succeeded.

Norm is one of my heroes.
