Another vote for Sarah Mclachlan.

Bonnie Raitt. Listen to "I ain't gonna let you break my heart again" from the Nick of Time album. Awesome.

Jewell
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Sting
Rufus Wainwright
Jeff Buckley

It is often just a single song that really sends a shiver down the spine. Other songs by the same artist just don't have the same effect. The lyrics and the meaning of the song also contribute to the effect.

i personally think john lennon had the best rock and roll voice of anyone in history, ever.

kurt cobain continued the legacy. he was the best screamer of my generation.

bjork is the most unique and inimitable. hearing her live is an experience, to say the least.

i also dig:

paul simon - for his unique conversational-meets-intellectual style
ella fitzgerald - because she's amazing
joni mitchell - her vocal style has had an influence that is hard to overestimate

lately, i'm also really enjoying jenny lewis' singing in the band rilo kiley. lovely, straightforward, honest, yet powerful.

I agree with John Lennon having a great voice for rock and roll. Clear, cutting, yet not like fingernails on a blackboard.

Another great voice is Sinead O'Connor....again, clear, precise, not shallow, emotive. She's a bit..different...but nice voice.

the key thing about lennon was his emotion, imo. best example i know is the beatles version of "twist and shout." that is the most insane, vocal chord-shredding performance i have ever heard by anyone - yet incredibly musical at the same time. apparently the version that made it on record was the last take of the day (during which they had recorded the "please please me" album in its entirety) and john knew he only had one shot left before his voice gave out, so he just poured everything into it. apparently it took a week or two for his voice to recover. sounds like rock and roll to me.

BOB DYLAN #1 all time fav. voice. Probably because of the words.

Two others that come to mind, although not my fav. bands by any stretch.
Mike Stipe - REm
Eddie Veddar - PJ
Those two boys can sing!!!!! I WISH I could sing like those guys.

Man, I really dig the diversity of this forum! Some of these choices I agree with, some I don't and some I haven't heard. It's all subjective to one's own tastes, for sure. Here are a few of mine:

Sonya Issacs (The Issacs)- Star Spangled Banner (esp. live)
Moondi Klein (Chesapeake)- Always on a Mountain When I Fall
Vern Gosdin- Chiseled in Stone
Keith Whitley- Would These Arms Be In Your Way (harmony by Vern Gosdin and
EmmyLou Harris)
Alison Krauss- There Is A Reason For It All
EmmyLou Harris- Wayfaring Stranger, Easy From Now On (Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town)
Neil Young- Old Man
Dolly Parton- Coat of Many Colors, In My Tennessee Mountain Home (esp live version)
Blue Highway- Father I Know Why, Clear Cut, Some Day, Still Climbing Mountains, and Seventh Angel (yeah, I kinda like these guys-alot)
Tim Mensy- That Aint The Grandpa That I Know
George Jones- Walk Through This World With Me.
Marty Raybon- Beulah

These are just a handful of particular songs and their artists that just make the hair on my arms stand up and some even will move me to the point of watery eyes. Strong Stuff.

1 Dave Matthews - #41 and An Another Thing

2 Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten

3 Thom Yorke - Morning Bell and Sail to the Moon

Theres alot more but i would be here til 2 am naming all the people that floor me with their ability to sing.

And, someone that you probably wouldn't know if you don't listen to Contemporary Christian Music, but Christy Nockels from Watermark. She is maybe the best female vocalist on the planet, in my opinion. Check her out at www.watermark-online.com

Oh, another CCM artist is Ginny Owens. She has a really sweet voice that blew me away when I heard her sing "Be Thou My Vision"
