Don't think anyone's mentioned KD Lang either. She's got an incredible set of pipes. I heard her sing Roy Orbison's song Crying once in concert about 10 years ago. Still stands out as one of the coolest things I have ever heard live.

Patsy Cline - anything she did Janis Joplin, and I'm not really a fan, but when Melissa Etheridge came out at that awards ceremony, baring it all, and doing her best Janis, whew! Neil Young - but not with Crazy Horse Leon Russell Joe Cocker That's the short list. |

Michael Bolton.
Well, it's actually shudders he sends up my spine...but close enough.

Karen Peris (Innocence Mission) no one tugs at my heart strings like her gentle soprano. If you've never heard of IM, try and find a download of "Clear to You"
Maynard James Keenan (Tool, Perfect Circle) the totally opposite spectrum, as no one touches my dark side. I'm sure it's highly debateable but I feel he's the best voice all-time in a heavy rock category. His passion is undeniable. Lyle Lovett, again, a very sincere and original voice Anita Baker, the queen of my R & B moments Not sure of their names but the duet from East Mountain South work very well together.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but it is a tie between Kate Bush and Tori Amos, with a slight lead to Ms. Amos.
Mmmm... wow. I am going to pop in Scarlett's Walk now, come to think of it. Also, I defy anyone to rock harder than the live cut "Precious Things" off of "To Venus and Back..." makes Metallica sound like the Telletubbies.

I'll add Ella Fitzgerald. I just recently saw a segment from a concert she did in Europe. She sang "Summertime". I don't think it gets any better than that.

Israel Kamakawiwo`ole... Bruddah Iz for sure has a haunting voice recognized, of course, too late as he was taken much too young.
And if you've seen "The Bands" Last Waltz video or heard the soundtrack, their version of "The Weight" backed up by the Staple Singers. Ms. (Mavis maybe) Staple's voice is so syrupy sweet and rich that if you could bottle it IHOP would buy all you could make.

Hi all,
I've seen some awesome singers listed here and certainly some that I'll have to seek out for download. Thank you all for being so informed and teaching this music snob what I've overlooked. Here's one, however, that I didn't see ANYBODY list in the first 3 pages(I got impatient). Mia Doi Todd. Her voice is oddly haunting in a low and lazy way. Other faves are... Thom Yorke(Radiohead) Perry Farrell(Jane's Addiction) Ian McCulloch(Echo and the Bunnymen) Annie Lennox Billie Holiday Loreena McKennit Lisa Gerrard(Dead Can Dance) Jeff Buckley J. Mascis(Dinosaur Jr.) There are more...but so little time and space to continuum in!
