Anyone listen to Nick Drake?
I have listened to a few Nick Drake songs and I want to buy one of his CDs, and I was wondering which would be the best to start off with. So if anyone had any input that would be great. Thanks

I used to listen to and play alot of ND. You cannot go wrong with Pink Moon. I wont offer an all -to -typical eulogy, but 'Place to Be', 'Road', and 'Which Will' are three of the greatest songs ever written and performed by a fingerstylist singer songwriter. Nick was undoubtably one of the most ingeniuos and underappreciated musicians, artists, and poets. Proceed with emotional caution.

love his stuff. i can recommend all of it. "bryter layter" is grayte.
do yourself a favor and also pick up the soundtrack to "the royal tenenbaums." in addition to a lot of great music, mark mothersbaugh of devo did all of the original music, which he's done for all of wes anderson's films. and nick's "fly" is on there. enjoy. |

Yes, Pink Moon is my fav. Listened to it last night. Really nice mood music. He was a very creative minimalist type player. Listen to it in the car, on a nice night, cruising the backroads!

The only tune of his I really care for is Pink Moon - aka VW song.
I have co-worker who loves him, he has the box set. Its good stuff, just not my cup of tea, seems VERY depressing to me. |

Depressing? Maybe! Personally, I reckon it's beautiful stuff. My favourite is also Pink Moon - very little other instrumentation on there, and you can really hear what's going on with the guitar. Bryter Layter is more produced, which I like too, just not as much.
Other folk will tell you that Five Leaves Left is the definitive ND album.... but what do they know!

I'm going to chime in with the contrarian view: I'd recommend Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon for order of acquisition. Don't bother with any of the other releases until you've got those, especially the rarities compilations that seem to pop up almost every year now.

they released an interesting "rarities compilation" last year called made to love magic, I don't know about other compilations but this one is quite good, there are new songs that could have been recorded on Pink Moon

You could get Nick Drake's introductory album called
"Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake" Of course, he didn't title it that, and they're mostly from other recordings, but it's a great album.

All of his albums are amazing. My preference order as to start would be:
1. Five Leaves Left (album) 2.Pink Moon (album) 3. Time of No Reply (rarities collection) 4.Bryter Layter (album) Also Way to Blue is a good compilation of some of his stuff made by his producer, Joe Boyd. |
