Do Dogs Like Some Tunes Better Than Others?
Usually, when I play at home, the dog drifts off to nap or play with his toys until I finish. Shows no interest beyond knowing I won't be messing with him.
About a week ago, I started to learn the Irish hornpipe "The Peacock's Feather" and have played it a lot since getting it down. When I play it, the dog comes over, sits by the chair, and stays till I finish or switch to another tune. I play other Irish tunes, Drop D tunes, he pays no attention. I play "Peacock's Feather" and he's right there every time. |

My dog(s) both tend to come and lay around my feet when I play (I sing too, so maybe that has something to do with it). But then again they follow me everywhere, so maybe it's not the guitar.

I used to have a parrot that loved Neil Young. It ignored anyone else. Once I put on Neil, it began to whistle and chirp the whole time.

My dog just cocks her head at that funny angle when I hit some high notes...

I work on other peoples music all day, and my dog definitely leaves the studio during some of the more.... interesting albums I have to master. He loves when I sit and play guitar though, always comes and naps nearby.

One of my dogs will go over and sit next to the guitars when I come home from work.
If I've got chores to do, he mopes off, but later when I pick one up and start playing he comes from wherever he might be and comes and sits at my feet. He likes a lot of the country and or americana type stuff. Neil Young is good. Alice in Chains... not so much. On things he really likes he will sit up and scoot up and put his ear next to the sound hole of the guitar. Pretty cute. He's a good boy, tolerating my thrashing about.

That's interesting, HHP. Are you singing also or just playing guitar? He/she must like that melody.
My father's dog always sits next to me when I play guitar. Very different than his previous dog who would just bark nervously at the guitar. |

I wish my dog was more "into" my playing, but that is a pretty unrealistic expectation I guess.
He follows me around the house and as soon as I grab my guitar he does the dog equivalent of rolling his eyes as this means there will not be any walks or play time for another hour or so.

If there is a dog around they usually listen to this song.

No singing, I'd almost understand it more if singing was involved. The only unique thing about the particular piece is some rapid rolls and sustained bass notes.

I have a basset hound. She likes to sleep when I play. She also likes to sleep when I don't play.

Interesting. I've played "The Peacock's Feather" for years. It's gotten applause in live performance, but neither the dog or the cat has ever shown the slightest interest in it.
Maybe the way you're playing it you're somehow hitting some harmonics that are so high in pitch that you can't hear them, but the dog can and (fortunately) likes. whm |

My dog Buster and music:
If I plug in to sing and play through my amp (acoustic) he goes to the door and rings his bell to go outside. If I play something on the stereo with strings or harmonica, he sings along. If I try to practice harmonica, he sings along. This is why I don't play harmonica. Although on one occasion I started my looping pedal (with microphone) called him into the room (through the looping station), played a couple of notes on the harmonica, he sang along and I looped the whole thing for a few minutes. Good times, good times... |
