Default Favorite line from a song

The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing For the Lonely
Hey thats me and i want you only
Dont turn me on again
I just cant face myself alone again...

Tomorrow I'll be in some other sunrise
Maybe I'll have someone at my side
Mama give your love back to your husband
Father you have taught me well-goodbye...

I love these kind of threads because I always learn about some great songs that I didn't know about.

My offering is the chorus from Cheryl Wheeler's song, 75 Septembers, that she wrote for her father on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

Now the fields are all four lanes
And the moon’s not just a name
Are you more amazed at how things change
Or how they stay the same
And do you sit here on this porch and wonder
How the time flies by
Or does it seem to barely creep along
With 75 Septembers come and gone

Best,
Jayne

Starry starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
with eyes that watch the world and can't forget
like the strangers that you've met

The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow...

Don McLean..."Vincent"

Springsteen: Those memories come back to haunt me/They haunt me like a curse/Is a dream a lie if it don't come true/Or is it somethin' worse

Dylan: I had a job in the great North Woods/Workin' as a cook for a spell/But I never did like it all that much/And one day the axe just fell

Dylan:Then she took down a book of poems and she handed it to me/Written by an Italian poet in the thirteenth century/And every one of them words rang true and glowed like burnin' coals/Pourin' off of every page like it was written in my soul/From me to you....Tangled up in blue

.........................Plus about a thousand more songs by the above artists and many others

And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

So many great lines to choose from. Here's one...

"Mama if you could see me right now
You'd be so sure you failed me somehow "

Okay two..

"She loves the sound of the rain,
but you know she's still afraid of the thunder.
She keeps her head full of hope,
and her heart is so full of wonder.
She might look like a woman,
but she's still some daddy's little girl.

And I think that she may be
the oldest baby in the world."

John Prine, The Oldest Baby in the World

"Now the banjo takes me back thru the foggy haze
Where memories of what never was become the good old days."
- Steve Martin "Daddy Played the Banjo"

For me, this is about the best line ever written about bluegrass. Its theme of nostalgic regret takes listeners back to a better time that never existed.
