Default Selected Some Wood for my Archtop today

Hi,

I visited my luthier's shop today to go over some details and to select the wood to be used to make the guitar. We looked at 6 or 8 sets of big-leaf maple. It can down to these two:

The first piece had a wider, somewhat serpentine grain and an unusual three-dimensional illusion to its flame.

The second piece, was more traditional; tighter in its grain with lots of flame.

I chose the tighter grained piece (it was a tough choice). We also selected some rock maple for the neck (see below)

We also picked out some European spruce for the top but I did not get a shot (sorry). It will take about 1 year to make.

:-)

Bob

At the risk of stating the obvious; that's some REALLY nice maple!

The first set would show quilt if it were flat sawn. But I agree with your choice of #2 for this grain orientation.

So who is building for you?

And just BTW, do you know that a m7 chord doesn't function as a tonic minor?

Not to derail the thread, but it would if his username were iim7b5v7im7 - I think

Default It has arrived...

Hi,

Well, after 14 months of patiently waiting, the guitar has arrived. It's everything that I hoped for. It basically is a Comins Classic Model that I had him customize to my needs in terms of some sizes, profiles and appointments. Bill is truly one of the Worlds master archtop luthiers. He is humble regarding his talents when you talk with him or visit his shop. They may come different, but in my opinion, they don't come better!

:-)

Bob

It is a 16" lower bout, full 3" in depth at the rim, 25" scale.

The top is tap tuned, Carpathian Spruce:

The back is US Big Leaf Maple:

Hidden volume & tone pots under the ebony finger rest:

Bill's ebony tailpiece design with a custom cast brass insert.

A compensated ebony bridge for excellent intonation past the 12th fret:

A floating Kent Armstrong pickup with adjustable pole pieces:

Oh my. It is perfect. It is basically a large Stradivarius. Your bourgeois is a perfect compliment I bet. I am researching your third guitar now. I just picked up my bourgeois, btw and am looking at maple arch tops for the jypsy jazz thing.
