Wondering everyone's opinions.
I personally will take the HD28 over the D28 or HD28V. To me the D28 just lacks a little after playing the HD series. The HD28V sounds great but can't justify spending that much more. I wasn't that impressed w the one I played for some reason. I am finally getting my new HD28 in 2wks. I've played close to 20 of them before buying one. Found the perfect one. I think the HD28 is the perfect tone for solo stuff but can also cut through the mix when playing w a full band and sounds and plays better than the other two. Just my opinion. Wondering what everyone else thinks. |

Had 'em all; have many of them still. I LOVE the D-28 in all its variations.
The HD28 is a fine guitar and if I'd bought my first Martin 5 years later than I did, it would have been my first Martin. But it wasn't around in 1971. ![]() I DO admire the Vintage touches and knew I'd get one eventually. It was worth paying for, although I went whole hog and got a Custom Shop version in different woods. At my annual birthday pickin' party last weekend, three of my buddy's were there with their HD28's, one more with an old D-35 and we all swapped around my four various D-28's. Not a bad sounding guitar in the house!

Playing in a band is not a consideration for me. That may be why I prefer the HD-28V. I'm guessing that what I hear as lush texture would be a handicap in a band. If I were planning to play in a band, I'd want to try out an -18 in that setting. A D-18GE I tried sounded very clean and focused, but it lacked some of the warmth of the HD-28V. It's not a guitar I would choose for accompanying my own vocals.

To me, the D-28 is the best fit for my style. I played all three back to back to back with a friend listening and then playing and we both decided that the D-28 was the best for for me. I wanted to like the Hd-28 better because I like the look better, but D-28 is my next purchase once I sell my OM. That's why they make all three though. That way, you can pick what works best for you.

You ought to be a D-28 personal shopper. 40+ years of shopping ought to qualify/certify one!

Sure love the HD myself but, Kydave have demonstrated some great D's recently which I find very appealling.

I just got an HD-28. You will love yours! KYDave's sound clips sent me over the edge; I did have the new style D-18 on order, which I cancelled. I already have some hog, and now I also have some Rosie as well.
By the way, I have a D-15 and a Gibson Sheryl Crow, and the HD-28 is now their brother. But I have to say, if I could only have one guitar it would either be the D-35 or the HD-28.

My best friend has an HD28. For playing alone, gosh it's just the best. Full, smooth, rich, even my singing sounds good with it! I went to buy one a few years ago, ended up with a custom rosewood classic, made for guitar center. They sounded so close and it was much cheaper so I got it. However, in the looks department .......the HD28 all day long!

The HD-28v's I have played just do not seem consistant and can be muddy to my ear. But I have heard and played 1or 2 outstanding ones. I narrowed my choice to an HD-28 and found a very speacial one among some very nice ones of the same model. This guitar never ceases to give me a good case of the grins every time I play it. I installed a DTAR Multi-source pick up system and it really does this guitar justice. I couldn't be happier.

I guess it depends upon what you mean by "muddy," but I have to agree with you Dave, I have NEVER heard what I would refer to as a "muddy" HD-28V. All I have ever heard are KILLER HD-28Vs.

Put red spruce on the forward shifting and it might win, but I prefer the HD-28 bracing on sitka.
I think and HD-28 can handle everything the other guitars can. But that's not necessarily true the other way around. At least for my playing style. max |

Yeah I've played close to 20 of them around town and found the perfect HD28. Get it in two weeks. Can't wait. Been wanting this guitar for 12 years now luckly my music career is picking up and getting playing non stop these days. Throwing a Matrix Infinity in it very excited. Def will post pics when I finally get it.

I've owned them all, plus the Marquis and America's Guitar, Martin makes great 28's, and they all sound different.
To me brand new D-28s are tight, and part of the reason new HD-28's with scalloped braces have an advantage in an A/B. I love D-28s with some years on them. HD-28V's are warm and smokey, my favorite, but not the best ensemble, where a brighter guitar cuts through better. There is no best, just a lot of great flavors to choose from..............
