Anyone have any experience with the diminutive Kala UBASS, preferably the acoustic ones, the all mahogany or spruce top? Likes, dislikes, thoughts?

They are an excellent product. The strings are kind of tricky to change. THey are very popular over at Talk Bass Forum. I wouldn't give up my fretless Alembic for one, but I did get the Acacia version for my Son and I to share.

I have the sprucetop fretless. I'm not a bass player, but I have played bass quite a bit (if that makes sense). I got it so that I could get a pseudo standup bass sound on my recordings. The thing is awesome. I haven't recorded with it yet, but I love how easy it is to play, and how it sounds, both plugged in and unplugged. However, unplugged it's pretty volume challenged.

I played one at Fretted Instruments up in Amherst MA a few months ago. Great plugged in, not so much on its own, but that's to be expected. It wouldn't replace any of my basses, but it's a cool novelty instrument. My partner has a miniature D-28 (made by Martin, but never mass produced) and I always imagined starting a set "We're gonna play a little guitar" and pull the "D-1 and 7/8" (as we call it) and a Kala U-bass.

Thanks, guys!
I'm considering one for a recording project. I'd likely never use it for performance (unless someone else was playing it) but it looks like it would do the job for putting some bottom end in the band's recordings (more than the baritone does now anyway). Now all I have to do is find one...some of the reviews of the "off-the-shelf" quality seem to leave a lot to be desired...so finding one to try and then getting it properly setup seems necessary. Phil
