SOLD: 2008 Fay --- Adirondack/Brazilian OM
$4,600 + Shipping --- United States only
I am selling a guitar that I built for myself. I found a cheap little beater that I have made playable and can drag around everywhere. I hate to see it go but I will have newly built instruments here at my shop that I can play. This guitar was completed in November 2008 and features an extremely nice Adirondack top and a beautiful and unusual looking set of Brazilian Rosewood. The guitar is in near perfect condition, aside from a very, very minor bump in the soundboard finish -- it is difficult to see unless in just the right lighting. The nut width is 1 13/16" and the string spacing at the saddle is 2.25". Last edited by Simon Fay; 03-26-2010 at 12:49 AM. |

Beautiful Simon! Is this the one I played briefly at Mr. Filkin's house this past summer?

Hi Simon:
I have heard may good things about your instruments but have never had a chance to play one. What is the scale of this instrument? Does it have nice clarity/separation and still nice fullness/resonance? Thank you much Craig Last edited by CraigRyder; 02-28-2010 at 08:25 AM. |

I've only played one of Simon's guitars but I think the particular question you asked is their strongest suit. There's a fine line between having a full/resonant sound and having a tendency to get muddy. I'd say the Fay OM is one of the two best guitars I've seen at being both resonant and clear in its articulation (the other was the Kragenbrink "Road Trip" guitar and if anything I'd give the edge to the Fay in this characteristic).
Simon seems to build guitars that work great for fingerstyle without edging over into being extreme sustain-monsters like something like Goodalls or even some of your high-end fingerstyle machines from Ryan, et. al. I love hearing that big sound but without the midrange overtones overwhelming the treble fundamentals. I don't know how the Brazilian Rosewood would figure into that but it's unlikely to hurt!

Hi Todd,
Yes, this is the one. Hi Craig, I got your message and just sent off a more detailed answer to you via email. To answer briefly on here, I would answer your questions with a yes. My guitars always tend to be very vibrant and emotive instruments - and that is accomplished by making the guitar extremely responsive. This instrument has a very full, lyrical sound that I think excels at fingerstyle but is still a very versatile instrument. Overall, I'd say it is one of the best guitars I have ever built. The scale is 25.0" |

I am having Simon send it my way. This is the second guitar this week. The other being a Cervantes Crossover I Signature series that went up for sale a few days ago. I have to stop coming to this site. Cheers Craig |

Sold -- but with a several day trial period. I will post again when it either becomes "permanently" sold or goes back on the market.
