Cool My Transcription - Waltzing Matilda by Larry Pattis

This is waaaay overdue, but better late than never, right?

Maybe it's just my own song selection, but I've noticed that many of the best solo fingerstyle arrangements I've heard do not have accurate sheet music available online. So, why not transcribe them myself and learn a thing or two along the way?

Here is the first of (hopefully) many that I intend to share, assuming I am able to obtain permission from their respective artists. I always believe that a song should be learned "in context", which is why I include a short introduction for every transcription. This is still a work in progress, and any updates will be shown in the "revision date" on the first page.

A big "thank you" to Larry Pattis for allowing me to share this freely and for making a couple of corrections to the transcription. The album that this is taken off can be found here:
http://www.larrypattis.com/order-cds.html

EDIT: Forgot to include the YouTube video collage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBuEQBkYqmU

This is my transcription:
(I'll put up a proper webpage as I go along)

Here are some preview shots:

Thanks for transcribing this beautiful rendition and sharing it. Given I live in Oz, I suppose I must give learning this song a try!

I already did

The real question is, why would you want to listen to that when we can listen to Larry's version here?

It would be cool if someone from the AGF were to learn this song with the help of the tab and then post a performance on YouTube

Yes, it would! Regardless of whether that occurs, I'm sure there are a number of us plugging away at it. I'd be lucky to get the tune recognizable, never mind stylistically suave! I really appreciated your music notation key; that alone taught me a thing or two.

If YouTube still exists at the end of the next decade..... :-)

Your performance was beautiful.

Thank you for posting the music. This gives me my first DADGAD piece to work on. Should keep me busy for a LONG time!

Thanks, but I can't really take credit for it. There's a forum member who makes this available on his site along with an excellent TablEdit tutorial:

Work on those vibratos; they really add to the song

I rarely play in DADGAD, but this arrangement was too beautiful to resist. Maybe Larry will drop by and give us all some pointers about performing it

Remember that this was essentially a protest song, and is about a guy who jumps in a river and drowns while trying to escape the local constables.

I think it's a bit of a sad story (read the unedited words!), and it's also (for me) reminiscent of my childhood, when we would learn folk songs from around the world in grammar school.

So I play it as a ballad, rather than as a jaunty, up-tempo bar song!

As Mak has said, it's all about pauses and working the notes with the left hand...as well as the right.

My thanks again to Mak, who is too humble in the work that he did to produce the Tab/notation, and with his own very-well-done playing of the piece.
