Default Yamaha FG 750

Okay, so I went to a few guitar stores in my area this past week, to try to pick out a guitar that I could get back into the hobby with, and hopefully grow into as I got better again.

I played around with a bunch of Seagulls, Art/Lutherie's, Norman's, all around the $400-$450 price-range. and what I found was that one guitar blew them all out of the water: Yamaha FG 750. I was quite surprised, so I picked up the same model at another store, and again it had amazing brightness and volume. Now I don't know all that much about what makes a great guitar, but to my ear this one sounded really bright and crisp and loud. Not to mention the neck/fretboard felt great.

It's a solid-top (spruce) with laminate back/sides (the guy in one of the stores said Maple, but my research says sycamore). I went and played an epiphone masterbilt there too, (a hundred bucks more) and it turns out that I didn't even like that QUITE as much (although it was gorgeous) and it's all-solid-wood.

All you Taylor and Martin players, i pose a question to you: Am i doing something wrong or should I just go for it?

Hi there,
sounds like you have done everything right. You tried out a load of guitars and found one you really liked the sound and feel of.
Yamaha guitars go from cheap to pricey and there are very few that aren't great value for money.
Go for it, I say.

Good luck with your new guitar.

Yamaha has always made a good product, at least in my memory! I and many of the other folks around here are definitely "go with your ears" folks. If this guitar sounded great to you, go for it. It's best if you have a few guitars that you like all in the same place so you can A/B them all together and make your decision.

Best wishes in the hunt!

Your ears and fingers do not lie. Go with that, not brand reputation.

I have a couple Martins and a great Taylor but if you decide to get the Yamaha 750s I will warn you... you'll find it hard to come up with a reason to ever get rid of it. I have one, and every time I pick it up and strum it, I remember why I bought it. Plays like butter, and the laminated sycamore looks good.

If you don't succomb to GAS, it could easily be a guitar you have around for 10, 20, 30+ years.

I have two acoustic guitars, both are Yamahas.

One is an old laminated FG-335, the other is a brand new handmade LL16.

I love 'em both.

I think you can guess what my opinion would be...

Get the Yamaha!!

I bought the FG750 a couple of months ago as my second guitar to play in my office so I can keep my Taylor 310ce at home. I think the FG750 is the best guitar in its price range. You should go for it.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your input guys.

Went out and bought the badboy today. Got home and played it for a while, until my fingers felt like they used to when I played an hour and a half of bass a day!!

It's gorgeous and has the brightest sound I could hope for.

I'm going to have it forever

THANKS,
- JL

Nice choice. Most of my favourite guitars are Yamahas.

I used to own that same model in fact. It'll treat you well!
