I just picked up a 1985 Alvarez Yairi DY74 for next to nuthin and this thing sounds great!! can anyone tell me any thing about it?Its a solid spurce top and looks like solid rosewood back? The bridge i lifting a little and theres a small crack runs from the sound hole back along the top of the finger board, but it looks like its been there awhile and seems to be pretty stable.Other than that its in pretty good shape. After i cleaned it up and put new strings on it i was amazed at how good it sounds.Im tickled pink!!

Thanks a bunch
Steve

I Think I used to own this model. Tell me if I'm wrong. Cedar top, Mahogany back and sides, cutaway. I KNOW I owned a DY74 that I bought in 1990. I loved it. Very warm due to the cedar top, and very loud secondary to the Mahogany and the size. If it is the same Model Yari used to make a VERY similar guitar that was a Jerry Garcia signature.

Sounds like you SCORED.........................Enjoy

Terrapin im sure its a spurce top and it looks like rose wood back and sides and no cutaway. It has a herringbone center strip down the back Iveroid binding and a D28 style rosette with a D28 style tortis pick guard and snowflake mop position markers. The sound is that dry woody martin type sound.

So, I'm wrong again. But I can attest to the fact that Yari guitars from that period were very nice instruments.

There is a much better place to ask your question.

Go here

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/yairiguitars/

There are several very knowledgeable people who post there. One of them is a Japanes fellow that owns several very high end Yairi guitars. He also has a web site with lots of old literature from Yairi.

Go to YouTube and search for Yairi Factory Tour. There is a two part professionally produced video tour of Yairi. You will also learn how to pronounce Yairi correctly. It is different from the American way of saying it.

They are wonderful guitars and as you will see in the video a very much hand made guitar. Yairi also has one of the best selections of wood and you will see some of it in the video. It is equal to or better than Taylors.

Your DY-74 is laminate of the same wood for the back and sides. My DY-73 is Mahogany laminate for the body. The outer layers are mahogany. I don't know what the center section is.

For the most part the DY's are laminate with some exceptions in guitars made in the 80's. The 80's DY's with high numbers like 90 to 98 or so are solid wood. There are some 80's Brazilians that are solid too. Currently anything DY is laminate and DYM is solid wood.

Hi Steve. I had a DY77 (herringbone dread) that I bought in 1974. Not sure of the model similarities, but mine was spruce topped (pretty sure - although it had that golden cedar color) and was jacaranda back and sides (per the catalog; I've thought all along that jacaranda was Indian Rosewood; told recently that was the colloquial name for Braz; not sure. Looked like Indian - nice straight grain.) Small snowflake fret markers; herringbone backstripe, top edge, and soundhole edge.

Great guitar. Only sold it to buy a D35, which was my dream at the time. Wish I had both now!

Great find. Congrats.

Do you mean 1996 or after? I believe my 1997 DY74 Cutaway has laminate back and sides.

I was just wondering

I owned that exact model in the late 80s and early 90s. I bought it in a Denver guitar shop and loved it for many years. It didn't project as much as I would have liked, but it had a fabulous dry and woody tone and it recorded like an good, old Gibson. I traded it for God knows what. I do remember a neighbor of mine out in Colorado who was rep for Alvarez Yairi, and he drooled over it. He kept wanting to buy it, but I kept saying "nah..."

Nice guitar
