Default Something very good is lost...

When the great 1973 ever-lovin' blue-eyed soul song, "Get Ready," by the band Rare Earth, is sung in the background of an arthritis commercial by a senior-sounding chorus.

That is all.

Bob

Seems far more appropriate for a Viagra commercial to me... at least that would make a bit more sense...

Rare Earth DID a great version of that tune, but I always thought that someone else wrote it/had a hit of hit... like the Isley Brothers or someone like that?

Well, whoever and when ever, it is a GREAT performance of that song...

(Just looked on WIKI, it was the Temptations, written by Smokey Robinson, near as I could tell...)

Rare Earth were okay for white boys, but their version couldn’t hold a candle to the Temps!

I forgot the Isley Brothers had covered it in the first place.

I always kinda thought that crevasse had been crossed when I began hearing AC/DC and Ozzy over the PA at sporting events.
On the aside, I have a lot of respect for people who can play drums and sing. I can only play guitar & sing on fairly simple songs. And if I begin to concentrate on playing a lead etc, I'll lose my place in singing.
But drummers are coordinating both their hands AND feet while also singing. That's talent in my book.

Actually, Rare Earth just covered the Temptations version, three or four years after the Temps had already scored a hit with it. Another great Smokey Robinson penned tune.

They could transition to being helicopter pilots who do the same. The only thing anchored on a chopper pilot's body is his backside. All his limbs are constantly flying the aircraft. Once you add talking to air traffic control, a chopper pilot is right up there with a singing drummer.

Bob

Of course, the most famous singing drummer was probably Karen Carpenter. And what an example!

Then add giving on-air traffic reports every 10 minutes, and he’s right up there with a singing plate spinner on a unicycle juggling flaming chainsaws.

I enjoy both the Temptations and Rare Earth. For this song, I like Rare Earth's version more. Does that mean the other is not good? Not at all as they both are very good, in my opinion. This is just my preference for this song.

Overall, I like the Temptations much more for all of the music they provided during my youthful years. The group I played in way back then covered a lot of their songs which was well received by those coming to the dances.

Wasn't "Get Ready" a Curtis Mayfield song? I believe the original version was done by his group, the Impressions. All subsequent versions are not as good.
