Default 2013 Gibson J-35 - thoughts?

Hey, I played the 2013 Gibson J-35 for the first time tonight. I was impressed. It was clear, crisp, articulate, loud, and had that dry mahogany sound. I did a bunch of fingerpicking and found it very difficult to get a low volume though so I couldn't get great dynamics but it still had great tone.

I checked the Gibson website and it states that the 2013 J-35 is a modern equivalent to the J-35 introduced in 1936. What I don't know is whether this model was reintroduced this year or whether it was modified this year ... I take it that it was reintroduced?

Anyone have any thoughts on this guitar?

Hi Dru,
Reintroduced. There have been special runs for Fuller's. And there have been very pricey Luthier's choice signed by Ren.

Now, here they are at a nice price point.

Yep, that's the one I played. Congrats! I'm trying to remember the headstock inlay. It was something like "Only a Gibson will do" or something like that?

Thanks for the info Jim. The one I played was in the $1600s, which is a nice price point for a Gibson.

"only a Gibson is good enough" is on the banner.

And that banner and logo never was on any J 35 known to man prior to the new ones.

But Gibson did remember the correct number of frets.

Yes they probably could of left that off. I have seen some pics of the J-35 for the European market that doesn't have the banner logo.

Default played one..

I love the look of this guitar. Wanted to like it...but the one I played was too DDRRRYYY..no ring at all, just the thump. Sorry, I just don't like that. Now, if that's what you want and like then it may be your dream guitar for under $1700 and that is amazing. I find I like/love the new D-18 (2013) model more better!!!

I don't find mine to dry at all, and the trebles ring nicely. I guess there is a lot of variation from guitar to guitar as there is with all factory built guitars.

I played one yesterday.

It was a fantastic resonant guitar with really bright lively trebles.

A really enjoyable guitar to play.

Id love to give you some feedback Dru, but Ive not had the opportunity to play one yet.

But from what Ive read there seems to be a lot of players who were impressed with the guitar, not necessarily just Gibson fanboys ..

Played one about 3 weeks ago.... If I didn't already own 2 slope shouldered Gibsons I would have bought it on the spot. It was absolutely lovely.

The guitar in question was located in the Glasgow branch of GuitarGuitar.

If I was going for a J-35 I'd go for a Collings.

I'm guessing there is a "slight" difference in price?
