Question "odd" Martin at local GC

Saw a rather odd used Martin at a GC the other day, wonder if anybody has any info - it was a CM (someting something) 28, non-electric cutaway with an oval soundhole. It was made from a real dark rosewood, and looked consistent with other 28 level Martins. The salesman at GC didn't seem to know much about it, other than he had never seen a Martin with an oval soundhole either.....

Anybody know what this is?

I remember seeing a few 000 or OM size Martins with cutaways and oval soundholes in the 80s and maybe the early 90s. I think they were mahogany, and they were very plain in any event. Someone told me that the soundhole was oval because of the cutaway; either it didn't allow enough room for a round hole, or the bracing wouldn't support it. I imagine Martin didn't sell a lot of them, probably because they're not very traditional looking.

Was the guitar you saw new or used?

It was used, and was rosewood, not mahogany. That makes sense about the cutaway affecting the shape of the soundhole, as it was a small body. This one had a nice banded inlay along the back seam, don't remember how fancy or plain the rest of it was.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were mistaken about the wood. The ones I saw were mahogany, but it doesn't surprise me that there's a rosewood version as well.

Why do I suddenly feel like one of the Goofy Gophers (Mac and Tosh) from Looney Tunes....?

After you!
Oh, no no no, after you!
I wouldn't hear of it. Please go.
You don't mind?
Of course not!
Thank you!

I read somewhere that some of the earlier Martin 000 models with cutaways had an oval soundhole to allow for the bracing differences necessary for the cutaway.

At least I think that's what I read...

That's the one! Except the link has changed:

The one at GC was used, and $500 cheaper than the one at BB.
