Herringbone is a feature Martin did not offer on any Hog D-18's that I'm aware of. I love the look. I spoke with Bill at Artisan guitars once and he was of the feeling the Herringbone purfling may allow the top to resonate and vibrate maybe a little more than a top without any top purfling.

I also read about an Interview with Bill Collings who basically said 'everything' affects tone.

I don't know if Herringbone purfling around the border was originally intended to be more than purely ornamental, but it sure looks awesome!

* Congrats bro on that beasty Outlaw! ...I knew you were gonna get it after all our convos ha-ha! NOW the question is, what pickup since your gonna gig with it?

** Are you gonna possibly change tone with a UST? ...I wouldn't

*** Or attach something to the bridge plate? ...not sure I would do that either, maybe.

**** Or a soundhole mag? ...might deter from the aesthetics , but easiest in and out without affecting unplugged tone if you use a light weight model like the Angel or M80. I know you don't like mags much, but I would not want to glue or tape to anything to bridge plate or put a ust under the saddle; keep this limited edition Outlaw organic as possible! ...imho

Enjoy this killer guitar, miss the Collings rosie?

Love the tone... Does anything match it without the "OutLaw" Name?

Congratulations. It's a beauty!

Any idea why they call in an "outlaw"? Tortoise shell pick guard maybe?

They call it the Outlaw because its a guitar they never made. A confluence of best of class old school features and some modern build features. It has Martin Golden Era “Authentic” bracing. Its also a a Mahogany guitar with Herringbone Purfling that they never did. It has a lot of Golden Era features (Forward shifted, Hand scalloped X bracing) but also has a modern MLO/PA neck with adjustable truss rod and drop in Bone saddle.

Hi Eric,

No regrets letting the Collings “Rosewood” OM go. It was great, but I learned I am not really a rosewood lover and I have two other OM’s. So it was the logical choice to let go. And I am THRILLED with the Outlaw. It is a wonderful compliment to my Fiddleback flamed mahogany D-18.

I am leaning right now to the K&K PWN for the Outlaw. I agree it doesn’t make sense to put a UST under the saddle. A little tiny bit of glue for the minute little K&K discs doesn’t seem terribly invasive. Then I will see how it works with my Fishman Platinum Pro EQ preamp. But I may revisit the Red-eye preamp since they are known to be magical with the K&K. That said, the best and most comprehensive Preamp is probably the Tonedexter. So I have some experimenting to do. I just don’t want to put a soundhole Mag in the guitar visually and I dont think they are as natural as I want. So we shall see my friend! Thanks for being part of this journey!

“Only?” LOL I respectfully admire the option you mentioned however. I might check it out, but I hate the look of soundhole PU’s. ..especially in a guitar this beautiful. I have heard Eric’s (Noledog) M80 soundhole PU and it works great too. But I still hear some ‘magnetic’ tonal quality on the B and E strings that is just a little Unnatural. I will however check into the Tonedexter. Thanks. :-)

Gary, I hate to be the downer, but the Outlaw you demoed seems to lack in a multitude of areas...........

I'll PM you my address, since I know you won't want it anymore.

JK, I've never been a dreadnaught fan....but YOUR Outlaw sounds like magic!

It's funny how you mentioned you're now leaning towards Mahogany overall, and I find myself leaning that way too. To my ears...your Outlaw has plenty of bass....which soooooooooo smoothly meshes with the mids and trebles. Most Rosewood guitars have that typical "mid-scoop" but that Adi/Hog seems to be so complete tonally.

If you ever let go of that guitar, I think the AGF community will start a riot.....that sounds INCREDIBLE!

Congrats on your new Martin!!!!
