Slightly different take on it, but I really have been enjoying this one

Nicest crosspicking version of Whiskey I've heard, great work!
I think the alternate technique really helps it roll much better than it would w/ DDU.

+1 on the Robert Bowlin/Brad Davis version too.

But it sounds better if you can keep some sort of rhythm going when playing with a lone fiddle.

That's what the upright bass is for....
The majority of playing I do is bluegrass with friends. We get together 5 - 6 times a month to play. We always do Whisky in D. I'm typically on mando as we have plenty of guitar players. I've been playing BG over 40 years now and my biggest problem is keeping the songs from getting mixed up. If we play "Forked Deer" and someone calls Whisky next I have to get someone else to kick it off as they are so similar. I attribute it to the "startling variety in western music" ;-)

I love this one by Joe K Walsh

Agree with others, if I'm just playing rhythm I like playing out of D but prefer playing out of C if I'm going to take a break.

I personally am a huge Julian Lage fan, so I'll go with his version. He coaxes so much tone out of his guitars.

Here's a flashy version, but tasty too that I've often enjoyed listening to - Molly Tuttle.

The live Lage Eldridge version is fun.

They start out with dual improvisation that is not focused on the whiskey before breakfast Melody. Then there is a nice shift (relief) when they move from free improvisation into the melody.

I like this one a lot. Kind of a modern sound, and the Pono sounds pretty nice too! WBB starts at about the 4:30 mark.

I play it in a C position sometimes, and sometimes drop D. Depends on what mood I'm in.

My favorite version of this song by far is the live version David Grier plays on Richard Greene's album. Here is the link.

Here's a version I did up really quickly on garage band the other day. I'm no sound tech so it's not perfect. But, the original question was about a favorite version... this is my favorite to play. When it comes to fiddle tunes, I generally prefer to play and hear a pretty basic version that doesn't stray too far from the melody.

Ignore my kids playing in the background!

Nothing much to add, other than to say that this is a terrific thread -- some really nice versions that I hadn't heard before, along with a few familiar ones. Thanks folks.
