Spending only $199 for the MXL 4000 is a whole different thing. It gives me a great sounding mic to add to my mic locker at a very reasonable price.
Martin M. I completely understand budget constraints, I think you got a great deal, and I was not trying to convince you otherwise. As I said my post was directed specifically at jim1960 (which is why I quoted his post) because he had expressed interest in purchasing the Flea 47 which is in a similar price category as the Cathedral Pipes I mentioned, both slightly less the Neumann 147 and all three being more modern approaches to U47 type design with some variations between them . That is all.... there is no debate

Another 47 -ish (although not multi-pattern) from a very small small boutique builder to consider in that price range, is the Cathedral Pipes Notre Dame which is less well known but has a loyal following, all the components and build are said to be top notch.

http://www.cathedralpipes.com/notre_dame.php
Catherdral Pipes makes some of the most interesting looking gear. I've looked at there stuff in the past, as well as a bunch of other makers like Pearlman, Beezneez, Telefunken, etc. The Flea has been at the top of my list for a couple of years. I want something 47ish and the Flea might be the mic that comes closest to that.

This is a nice A/B/C comparison that includes a vintage 47.

Nor I. We're all making music, right?

Making music yes, making money hardly. My TuneCore account for that last two months has generated a grand total of $.50 cents. That doesn't even justify buying at $200 dollar mic, nevermind a $2,900 mic.

I've been lucky. My music has found it's way onto 30+ television shows. I have no idea how that happened. One day a royalty check showed up and they keep coming. Not a huge amount but enough to put my first cd in the black.

Well I'm not really into music for the money, basically for fun. I volunteer to play at two senior centers every week, that's a free gig, but it's fun and sometimes we get meals and always cakes, cookies, snacks etc....it's a nice night out. Having a slew of mics just increases my credibility as a home recording guy. So buying gear once in a while is a hobby for me. Some guys have boats, some have motorcycles, some have fancy cars, I have my little home studio.

As I said, the money was something I lucked into. Other than making the album, I had no hand in what happened. To this day, I still don't know. The studio, the instruments, and photography is where my money lands. All fun stuff.

Apparently I'm getting two 603S Blizzard mics because you get one free when you buy the MXL 4000 Blizzard (until 12/31) and you get one free if you buy the 2 year warranty plan !!

This is good for stereo recordings !! That'll make for a nice little rig !!

I got my mics today...they are beautiful !! Sound pretty good too on initial recording tests...I recorded the D-18 and on another track, some vocals...sounded pretty good to me, and blended them together.....Very usable.

I did a side by side recording using the Blizzard 4000 vrs the Neumann TLM 102.

Well the Blizzard puts out about 10-11 db stronger signal than the Neumann. Not much difference in sound quality when A/B test was given. Blended together sounds best, but you do have to turn up the volume on the 102 and turn down the volume on the 4000 to get the volume levels to match. Noise level on both mics while quiet recording was very low.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the Blizzard 4000 mic.

Here's the Frequency Response Chart of the MXL Blizzard 4000 mic. As you can see it's a fairly flat response, with a slight rise between 1K-5K. Still pretty good though...
