Default Test Recording

I'm trying Dropbox as an online file sharing. So this is a test. But, it was also a test recording of my Martin D-41. Let me know if this file service makes it easy for you to listen, a wav file.

Water is Wide - Martin D-41

Nope, got an error message -seems you have to sign up to listen to it. Make it a public file.

Please try the link again. It works with my browser without the dropbox application running.

Rick, I use Dropbox all the time and it runs in the background (on the Finder bar) on all of my Macs. I also get the 403 error, even when I am specifically log into my Dropbox account (ie. looking at my file list on their servers, not the local copy on my hard drive).

Did you put it in the Public folder? Here's a link to one of my WAV recordings that I've just uploaded to my Public folder, just to see if it makes a difference:

*Link Removed*

I noted, in the process of setting up the "share" to get the link, that there is a note about "upgrade to Dropbox Pro" to set share settings. Maybe they want you to pay to share widely?

Phil

EDIT: Apparently there is no streaming for WAV format files, so they default to a download (whether you specify dl=0 or not in your link, dl=1 is supposed to allow downloading, dl=0 is supposed to prevent downloading). It appears that the best option for Dropbox is a public link to an MP3 file that WILL stream in place (AND you can control the bit rate on your MP3 conversion upload).

I went thru this process recently trying to use Google "Drive". My results were not the best. Anyone tried this?

I ended up going the soundcloud route....

I agree that downloads is not a good option (for you or for me!) and I specifically set the dl= parameter to 0 so that it wouldn't (shouldn't) download (as per this link).

Does the MP3 work any better (again, download is set to false)?

Tip of the Hat (MP3)

(and thanks for the kind words!)

Phil

EDIT: So the MP3 streams in place in my browser (for me anyway). One step up from Soundcloud is that at least I can control the bit depth (Soundcloud reduces everything to 128k regardless of source (and can be "artifacty") whereas this is a 192k MP3 (and I control the source and the compression artifacts)).

Hi Rick,

Sounds really nice -- my only constructive criticism is that it sounds like the low end was cut down a lot. I would love to hear those bass strings ring out a bit more, but that's just me.

Best,

The Colonel

Appreciated! Thanks, but I wonder what speakers you use cuz my headphones and Deadalus setup gives me the lows.

You might find it useful to investigate 'Box' as an alternative to DropBox.

Free for up to 10 Gb, and if you upload WAV files they stream through a built in player.

I find DropBox fine for storage between work and home and file sharing from public folders, but it is not good at media playing.

Looks like the only option I have still is to download only.

I didn't realize soundcloud reduced the sound quality. Since my sound is'nt that quality, I wouldn't notice

Yes for the streaming option, no matter what file you up load, Soundcloud reduces it to a 128 bit MP3 file.

The download option will download the original upload file like a WAV. file for example
