Default Alessi custom Sterling Silver and black Mother of Pearl Tuning Machines

[/IMG]
Tom just received these yesterday and sent me a few pictures. I thought I'd share them here.
The plates and spindles are genuine sterling silver, brass gear, black mother of pearl buttons.
I asked Mr. Alessi to use a hand-"hammered" finish on the plates, as you can see in the pictures.
I thought this would give the tuners an "Arts and Crafts Movement" look, reminiscent of popular styles of the late 1800's. I think he did a beautiful job doing this. Bravo, Nicolo!!

It gives the tuners a more folksy, charming, and human touch. More so than if it was just a plain smooth surface, which to me just looks like a machine stamped it out.
I also didn't want an engraved floral or leaf motif, like he often uses on his classical guitar tuning machines--I'm choosing tuning machines for an American-made steel string guitar, not a European classical, after all!

I chose the black Mother of Pearl tuning buttons because, well, I just think they're beautiful by themselves, and their variety of pearly colors will complement the variety of colors in the Brazilian back and sides.

Tom is starting the guitar now, so soon I'll have some pictures to post.

Thanks! Nicolo really nailed the look I had envisioned for these tuning machines. Tom and I are both impressed with how they turned out!

They're very pretty but they will tarnish in time, won't they? Especially coming in contact with natural oils and acids in the fingers.

There is a thin coating applied to prevent tarnishing, so it shouldn't be a concern.

Default The wedding party posing for a picture

The ceremony is about to begin...cedar and Brazilian rosewood uniting in perfect harmony!

(sorry, I just got married about 5 months ago--couldn't resist the wedding analogy)

Included in the picture are the Brazilian back/sides, Western Red Cedar top, African Blackwood binding, Indian Rosewood neck, fretboard/ bridge blank mystery wood (not Brazilian), and plenty of blue Paua abalone to make it sparkle and smile.

Rosewood and cedar on an 00....just perfect. Add to that Tom's lattice bracing which makes the guitar so responsive. Look forward to following this build.

For now, Mark you will have to suffer with what you have.

What a great lineup!

Default Rosette: Design and Execution

I wanted to keep the rosette relatively simple, clean and harmonious with the rest of the guitar.
More of a "team player" than the star of the show.
I want the visual emphasis of the front view of the guitar to be on the fretboard, bridge and headplate, with their beautiful woods.
So the rosette consists of African Blackwood binding on the soundhole, and a perfectly proportioned blue Paua abalone ring.
I think a simple abalone rosette works especially well with cedar, since cedar doesn't have the natural shimmer and glow of a nice piece of spruce. The unadorned abalone really helps to brighten up the face of the guitar.

Here are some pictures of Tom's work and the (nearly) finished rosette.
