It's important for surfaces to be flat and square, and the parts of the bench front to be coplanar. I also was pushing the limit of the size and weight of pieces that I can move around. Mass and rigidity are key to a good bench. 85" long, 23" wide, 2-3/4" thick top. All hard maple except for cherry outer laminates in the long stretchers. It weighs about 300 lbs. with the vises. I kept thinking it would be a lot easier to make this if I had it to build it on. Old commercially made bench in the background, now retired.

Really nice bench, Howard. I have always wanted to make one but just can't seem to get a roundtuit.

Always like to jump in on these.

Have been a woodworker for over 30 years.
Specialized in winding handrails, radius raised panel, and custom cabinets/libraries.

Seeing wood projects (unless guitar related) bores me to tears.
Some custom furniture/art interests me.

Besides racing kayaks, Harley parts, Bikes, bikes, and more bikes!

Latest project/new model;

Notice anything different on the seat/chain stays?

Semi-Fat 3-spoke carbon wheels that double as a portable air tank.
(the whole wheel from the rim bed to hub is an air chamber)

also appreciate very much you publishing your research, and test results on
glue hardness, strength, and vibration characteristics.

Always read all the information I can find for design ideas.

Getting ready to build my first "Flat-Top".
May even have time to pull the body (back/sides) today.
Jumbo sized.

Will use a carbon top for this one. (probably) a wood hybrid neck.

Unearthing an old thread to show you something I recently made, which will serve as a way for me to tell you a bit about what I've been up to lately. First, the pics:

(That's my daughter working with me in the above pic. Below, my wife.)

Finally, the completed project:

Yes, a mobile chicken coop built on an old flatbed trailer, using a lot of recycled materials.

What am I doing building chicken coops? My wife and I launched a new not-for-profit initiative this spring, a farm whose mission is to address food insecurity in our area by producing fresh food for donation to people in need through local food pantries and meal programs, while also serving as a resource to support people in producing their own food and moving toward greater self reliance. Please check out our web site if you've got a minute:

http://www.morningsongcsfarm.org/

Since I'm a guitar maker, there's even something of interest specifically for guitar lovers on the site here:

http://www.morningsongcsfarm.org/events/

Speaking of things I've made other than guitars, I made the web site, and I made the logo. For the image, I made a painting and took a photo of it.

Since you all might also have an interest in things music related, I'll add a couple more pics of non-guitar things I've made in the past. Clay drums:

You might have to have a facebook account to see these pics of the drums. There's a bunch more of those in an album on my facebook page here:

Thanks for looking!

I used to build winery's. I didn't build all that you see, but most of it. Lots of credit goes to Bob Sabatino also.

I'm new to this forum and just found this thread. I used to play guitar in this restaurant and they asked me if I could make them a wine rack so I made this.

Holds 322 bottles of the finest red.

School houses. I helped lay the floor on this place on a trip to Cambodia a couple of years ago.

Interesting experience. I wrote up about it here.

Well, I am not a luthier, but brought up this old thread because I found a really nice 2 inch thick, 7 foot long, by about 20 inch wide Black Walnut live edge slab today. I think it is gorgeous. It will become a sofa table when I am done if I don't screw it up before then. But of course the guitar player in me is looking to see if it is quarter sawn (which it is not) wondering how many guitar sets I could get out of it haha!
