Eastman question E1-SS vs E10-SS
Hi forum friends,
I always like the sound of the Eastman slopes, and have owned one or two in the past. I loved the E10-SS particularly, after I had to deal with some setup issues. They have this new model E1-SS - which has electronics. Adi top Sapele back and sides. Any bracing differences? Any specific differences between these modesl you can highlight? Anyone have one? How similar is the tone vs the E10SS? Hopefully right there? Just curious. Thanks. |

I have an E1SS on order in sunburst. The one I played was one of the best guitars I ever played.
Sorry I can't offer a comparison with the E10SS.

If you are referring to the E-1SS Ltd., from the comparisons I have heard, the Ltd has a lot more of a boomy bottom and is fuller sounding all around.
It also "seems" louder. The E 10 SS sounds clearer, punchy but firm in the bass and would seem to have a bit more sophisticated voicing.

I've had the E10SS and now have the E1SS CLA LTD the 10 was bright, clear, and crispy, with a full gloss nitro finish the sapele almost seems to have built in reverb and seems more mid rangy bass notes perhaps are a bit less prominent than the mahogany E10SS trebles are sweeter with sapele, more shimmer if you will..... I thought so , and then I read in Taylors wood and steel, Mr. Taylor himself made a comment about sapele having nice top end shimmer long story short, if you like it clean, E10SS a little down and dirty with an open pore satin finish .... It's been a while since I tried out an E10SS and I really didn't spend much time with it since I already have the E20SS and wasn't sure it was a huge difference.
The E1ss-ltd, on the other hand, I really fell hard for it and had to take it home and I honestly wasn't looking for another guitar so it really caught me by surprise. The best I can describe the tone on mine is deep, rounded, throaty midrange. It's made me think Sapele is extremely underrated as a tone wood. I know lots say it's a perfectly fine tone wood but I think it's much more than that. I'd say compared to my e20ss it's more earthy sounding, if that makes sense.

I hearken back to my 2007 Taylor 310e which was Sitka/Sapele. I would say it is just a tad "brighter" than say Honduran Mahogany or whatever.
It is more about the build though as far as the tonal differences. I think Bob Taylor chose it for its traits and it is (was?) less expensive to use back then.

Doesn't the E1SS have a 1/2" shorter scale length? That might explain a difference in sound more than body wood or finishes.

I believe the slope shoulders Dreads of Eastman all have the same dimensions and bracing.

Why would the E10 be $1199 and the E1 be only $799? I’ve owned an E10ss and it was a great guitar. I get that the E1ss has fans, and is growly and attractive... with a (cheap) pickup... and I take it the e1ss is Sapele and the E10ss is mahogany...
(By the way, no matter what the specs said, most E10ss I have seen have that striped back... which makes me say Sapele...) But the price difference doesn’t make sense to me. I’m considering either the 1 new or the 10 used. |

The E10S has a hardshell case. Mahogany is more expensive than sapele. Otherwise, it beats me why one is $300 more.
I wish my Eastman dealer had other high end Eastman's to compare the E1SS to. Tobias is a relatively small store, and they have one room just for Taylor's, another room for Martin and several Santa Cruz's. The center room has electrics, ukuleles, and a rack of budget guitars including Eastman laminate models. That's where they have the new Ltd's hanging. Fortunately, they compare favorably to the high end Martin's IMO.

Which Eastman has the best string spacing at the bridge. The 1 11/16 nut makes me think the bridge saddle spaces is less than the J 45 studio I own and would want at at least the same spacing
