Question Brand names

What are the brand names for acoustic and electric carbon fiber guitars? Who makes carbon fiber 12 strings?

Emerald Guitars in Ireland makes carbon fiber 12 string acoustics.

As far as acoustics go, the major builders and places of manufacture include Emerald (Ireland), Rainsong (USA), Blackbird (USA), Composite Acoustics by Peavey (USA), Journey (China), Kevin Michaels by McPherson (USA), Leviora (Germany). As 121 said, Emerald builds 12 stringers, Rainsong used to but no longer, and I believe Composite Acoustics once did but no longer.

As for electrics, Emerald would likely build one as a custom at a price, but the others listed don't offer any. Some years ago before Peavey took over Composite Acoustics, they had built an electric guitar called "Blade" which you could probably find. It is pretty cool and some members here own one.

There was also a Swiss maker of CF guitars, Bruner. There is an Israeli maker of electric CF guitars, I do not remember the name. And there is a new, inexpensive CF guitar called the Klos that is just coming on line.

Yes - they lose a lot of employees getting it.

"Dragonbone" is the name for Thomas's carbon weave - the way he assembles the CF to make the guitar with the acoustic properties he wants. I have a Leviora and it's quite remarkable.

Rainsong used to build 12-strings, but no more. A few years ago when they switched molding processes and molds (the N2 neck) the 12-ers went by the way side. There is no active scuttlebutt about them ever coming back - I don't think they were especially great sellers versus the build effort. I want one, and should have pulled the trigger back when they were still on the market.

I may to "settle" for an Emerald X20-12 - or a Chimaera double-neck in 6/12 - to round out my CF collection and complete the conversion away from wood..........

I was lucky enough to at one time own a couple of the Rainsong WS3000 12 String guitars. They were very nice indeed but I will say that my Emerald X20-12 string is a better guitar all around. At least for me it is.

It has everything going for it and not a thing I'd change.

Good to know, Benderman. I've played WS-3000's before, but never been able to meet an Emerald in person. I would have to order on blind faith. I'm not afraid of doing that with Emerald CF guitar based on their reputation here.

I'm rather in the same boat, Earl. I have a WS3000, and I want to order a fan-fret X20-12, but I need to save my pennies (I'm in the process of moving, so things are tight!). I'd have no problem ordering sight-unseen from Emerald either (I did that with Leviora!).

I had a RainSong WS3000 but, as usual, it was a casualty of my GAS!

Not sure about electric CF 12-Strings, but for acoustic you would need to talk to Emerald if you have to have new, otherwise I would look for a Composite Acoustics, or a Rainsong on the used market. I used to have a CA Legacy 12 that was fantastic, but they used the same 1-3/4" neck so it may not be for everyone. When Rainsong told me they were dropping their 12-strings, I secured a DR3100, which is a dreadnought without electronics, and it is definitely a keeper. They also built 12-Strings using the Jumbo, as well as the WS (grand auditorium) body shapes, and they will pop up on the used market from time-to-time. Well worth the effort to look for one of those.
