Well, you've already met him, so first impressions are set.
But a good follow up question would be "what's the best Star Trek movie"? If he doesn't say #2, "The Wrath of Kahn", keep looking. Steve |

In the words of Kramer, "Jerry will tell you that The Wrath of Khan is the better picture, but for me, I always...[preferred Star Trek III]"

I used to use this product as a finish for woodturnings. It's an oil-based wiping varnish, and a pretty good one IMO. It is not tung oil. Pure tung oil would be a terrible guitar finish. The labeling of wood finishes takes some decoding. This product is one of many that toss in the words "tung oil" because these words have been found to have good associations and sell the product. The label does not say that it is tung oil. It says, "Tung Oil Finish." In finishspeak, this turns "tung oil" into a description rather than a substance, and the product does not need to contain a drop of actual tung oil! It is some mix of oils, resins, and thinners--in other words an oil varnish. From my experience it's somewhere in the middle between long and short oil. It may work OK as a guitar finish; a lot depends on how it is applied and rubbed out. It will be softer than lacquer.

I kind of like Matt's idea.
I would not put a lot of importance in a meeting with a luthier. I would have played a few of his guitars and really liked them. I would not ask many Qs as the guitar kind of speaks for itself. I mean, if you ate a great meal, the best you ever had, would you go to the chef and suggest/discuss spices before he cooked for you? Check the cooking forum for what olive oil he used? I'd say, I like the voice of your guitars. I really like that guitar there for reasons 1,2,3. I'd tell him a little about myself..... I play almost all finger style (whatever style you play,) I don't dig in really hard (however you play.) I tend to play these kinds of tunes.... What else do you want to know? (the only Q I'd ask) I'd let him choose the wood. |
