What did they pay for a good mattress in the '40s? Then add inflation to today.

I hear you! As a chiropractor, I think it's one of the most important choices one can make for their spinal/musculoskeletal health and well being. The prices are absurd, maybe because more than 80% of Americans suffer from lower back pain. And don't even get me started about obesity and de-conditioning of the human body.
Good Luck--------------It is an investment. I just mentioned to one of my patients that I bought/ordered a $4000+ Collings acoustic guitar. He looked at me as if the sky was falling! Maybe it is.

I've had my back broken in two places, a leg almost severed and covered with third degree burns, two discs shattered and removed, and have ended up with degenerative disc and joint disease. A good mattress to me is worth its weight in gold!

That being said the most I've paid for a mattress is around $1500, and that was KNOWING it was going to be worth it. I got a sleep number bed (one of the higher end ones) in 2005 shortly after my back was broken. Before then I'd never found a mattress I could sleep on without back pain (with the exception of a water bed, which is no longer practical for me) in my adult life. Since I got the sleep number bed I've had absolutely NO back pain when sleeping. None.

So, yes...I'd pay what it takes.

I was having major back issues last year, then we got a 3 (or 4?)-inch memory foam topper for Christmas. Love it! It's like a new mattress at a fraction of the cost at Amazon.

I was gonna make a post agreeing, and then adding all the other things that are outrageously expensive these days, and worked myself into a frenzy with a huge list, but deleted it.

Yeah, mattresses sure are expensive these days!

Oops. Sorry. Delete post. I misread the title as "Have You Been Mistress Shopping Lately?"
