The Scream takes all the skin off and the details are provided by how deep you carve into the flesh. The deeper you go, the more light transmittance there is.

Homer is easier - you leave the skin on wherever you want a dark line, and remove the skin (and some of the flesh) elsewhere to allow the flesh to be transparent.

For both of these pumpkins you need a good light source - a candle won't cut it - I use a 40 watt candelabra bulb. They take about 45 minutes each. The hard part is coming up with the idea.
