(Many) Tuner Questions
I noticed last night when restringing my Takamine (EAN40C) the tuners are loose....
So I realize the problem is the little tiny screws on the back of the headstock (one per tuner) holding the tuners on won't really snug up so to speak....They grab, but won't get really tight (although I did not turn the screws toooo far for fear I would strip them even more.....assuming they are stripped) Gotoh tuners BTW When strings are on and at tension, tuners are tight and do what they are supposed to (ie: guitar tunes up fine, stays in tune, etc....)... Should I fix the holes (toothpick and glue) so they are tight, install bigger or longer screws that will properly tighten, or is this a fairly normal thing and not to be worried about?? Should I just tighten the nut on top of the tuner.....??? And what about the the screw that holds on the tuner "grip" thingy...Should that be real tight??? I'm thinking I should be paying way more attention to the overall tuner condition / tightness when I change strings ..... Any tuner maintenance tips and insights would be greatly apppreciated.... Thanks a bunch!!! |

Toothpick and glue. NOT bigger screws.
You can also get some epoxy and put epoxy in the holes, let it dry and carefully drill. Don't drill through front of the headstock, you will feel really stupid for a very long time LOL

What about the other pieces and parts of the tuner?? Should I get all that stuff tight as possible? |

The hex screws on the front should be snugged-up time time to time, yes. You may be shocked the first time how loose they have become.

Next dumb question....do you tighten with strings on or strings off??

far easier to place a nut driver on it with the strings off.
