I've learned that prevailing thought is most often incorrect. Yet, not many question it.

A really important thing I hope is not missed here is you can tune popular social media platforms. My logins this morning mostly showed me family/friends stuff, two historical photos groups I like, and wading through the X mess was a link to something from a writer I enjoy. Just like broadcast TV and Radio, a few paid only platforms have shown most will not pay for a lot.

So what is it that LinkedIn was designed for according to you? IMO it was always about professional networking. In other words, about a specific form of socialising... something like Facebook but for colleagues instead of friends.

Professional networking. Professional being the key word there. Not social media "look at me and how great I am" garbage other than within your profession. Social media is a morass and nothing to do with professionalism in any sense of the word.

Linkedin, this forum, Facebook, X and others are all social media.
Originally social media was but not necessarily now web-based platforms and technologies that enable individuals and organizations to create, share, and exchange user-generated content, and interact. As mature as it is, and for how advertising has changed it is no surprise for it to have specialization. and many segments just like no surprise that it has become an advertising platform.

Two members of this household are there, same for 1/2 dozen at work.
In my case and for our son we likely have to spend on a Windows one which is unfortunate. I'll have to run an old QuickBooks file or have it for at least a few years into retirement. My son needs a still best with Intel engineering program. Everything I see still points all the wisdom to getting a first tier or business Windows laptop and my favorites are the Surface Laptops such as I have issued for work. Very solid design, no extra software crap. Dell Lattitude and HP Pro or Elite are generally good. I've been disappointed with some recent post-sale Dell support and my brother who buys dozens of Latitudes at a time has seen that frustration. A HP series with and without accountants keypad - 440 and 450 I recall - have kept our logistics folks happy and I see CDW has a really nice price on gen 13 i5 with 16 GB ad SSD drives. If you don't need Windows our staff and everyone I know seconds my experience with the M MacBooks. I constantly work with the Surface Laptop 3-5 gen, and the original and new MacBook Airs. The non-Apple battery life, phone integration and speed are whole other league. On the battery life, I only use the Surface Laptop for specific high security work tasks so not a lot gong on. Over and over my sort of equiv MacBook Air gets 2x to 4x battery life. It has the cut/copy/paste with phone. No matter how I try that Windows phone integration app is just crap by comparison. After the build quality and keyboard/trackpad combo the important thing I like about Surface family is no extra software crap. Though CDW is primarily a business and enterprise seller I get personal stuff there too. They have more choices to get Windows Pro which means granular control of updates. Everyone should know the Windows Pro also includes drive encryption in addition to granular control of more and some other features. For music lovers: A late model MacBook and OS will have the "home" compatibility and spatial studio support. I love how I can mix different speakers our sound systems in the house perfectly with the laptop or computer I'm at. One might be amazed by how much a pair of those little ball shaped speakers added to your laptop speakers. You can power non-Apple speakers with the "TV" device and other stuff is "home" compatible.

No, professional and networking being the keywords. If your professional networking doesn't have the tiniest bit of social aspects to it, well, I guess then it must really be lonely at the top.

Social meaning casual, non-business professional. Hopefully the people you deal with in office(s) follow professional and not the kind of casual "social" constructs we see in SM. |

I've been on the Surface Laptops for several years. During COVID lockdown I took my company audio post-production operation home for several months on a company Surface Laptop running Nuendo.

The Surface line is conservative in a way - not so fast to have latest chipsets and CPU - but the way their main types gen 2 - 9 have kept staff happy has been good. This possibly considered petty or picky touch and feel aspect might make sense for musicians. When you are at them for a lot of hours the Surface keyboards and same for those 4xx, 6xx HP Pro and Elite series also feel good. Our accounting, pricing and logistics people repeat liking the keyboards. Kind of related, the MacBooks are also back to both good and reliable keyboards.
