If you never heard of him play before and just heard him (not watched him) on a CD or radio you would think he's an average. If you don't then you need to raise your standards little bit. His playing isn't clean and his rhythm is inconsistent -- he is clearly playing songs that are too difficult for him to perform in front of an audience.

On several videos, his guitar is also significantly out of tune.

People are impressed because he plays popular songs that are difficult -- but like I said, he can barely play them.
