Highway One Fenders are the best bang for the buck for a "real one" but the G&L's are sweet. Their "Tribute" series guitars are cheaper than the standard line, but still eat the lunch of any MIM or Squier I ever picked up, YMMV

I have the '72 Tele Thinline Reissue. I really like mine even though it is a MIM. It has a nice tone from the wide angle humbuckers...some rock and some tele twang. I don't really care for the tuners it comes with though.

So who are some good on-line Fender dealers, good prices, good service?

Default for teles, i'd try here...

bill crook
http://www.crookcustomguitars.com/

for fender teles, custom shop and otherwise
http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/elect...ustom_tele.php

for a stock fender, the highway 1 texas tele is definitely worth a look, imho -
faster neck (12" radius) and warmer, hotter pickups than the american standard

Default '52 Reissue

Hi Jeff, I posted this a while ago in a completely unrelated thread (we were talking about feeling good after finally taking the leap and buying a guitar that we'd thought about for a long while). Here's a cut & paste:

Affirmation is a wonderful thing! I had been GASsing for classic Telecaster for ages, but had told myself that I had one too many electrics in the house as it was, and that from a passion for an instrument point of view, it's always been the acoustic guitar that sparked the flame for me.

Well, I gave in.

(seems like I always give in...)

Bought a '52 re-issue. And I LOVE it! I love the gleam of the finish and the fact that the natural grain is allowed to show through. I love the well balanced heft. I love the attention to detail and the simple, elegant electronics and controls. I love the thick, silky smooth neck. But most of all, I love that Tele twang!

I've used electronics (modeling) in an attempt to get my very modern PRS and Strat to create a vintage electric sound, but nothing has ever sounded like this.

I'm 'affirmed!'

ps: I bought the Tele used, online from an individual v.s. a store. It worked out really well - this time. Buying sight unseen hasn't always been so pain free. I try to buy locally, so that I can play the guitar before buying it, but sometimes I just can't get what I want in the timeframe I want it, so I take the risk. In this case, I wanted a '52 Re-issue ...pretty darn close to the model my Tele-hero Bruce Springsteen plays (or rather played ...he seems to be playing all sorts of different guitars these days).

pdks:

Sweet looking Tele!

Jeff:
I have 3 Tele style guitars:
* a '52 Fender Tele Reissue purchased new in 1982 (Joe Barden pickups)
* a 1988 Fender Custom Shop 40th Anniversary Tele purchased new
* Tom Anderson Rosewood Tele purchased used (based on Harrison's model used in "Let It Be"

My favorite? The '52 Reissue - and it's the cheapest of the 3. Besides being a screamer with terrific tone (due mostly to the Barden pickups), it's fun to play and has the Fender vibe.

A lot of it is mindset. If you enjoy the whole Fender mystic (and I do), go with Fender. If that doesn't matter, shop G&L and other brands. Fenders are typically noisy, by the way. Bardens, Lace and other pickups help fix that.

How much do you want to spend? What "sound" are you looking for, i.e. traditional "tele" sound or ...??
Many "Telecaster" players seem to favor Fender's '52 Tele reissue:

Although I've never tried it, Carvin's TL60 might be the right choice for you:

a custom-made guitar at a very reasonable price.

OR get a Squier Standard Telecaster, and start doing your own customizing!
