Best way to loosen a truss rod?
I'm afraid of damaging my guitar so I want to be careful. I'll practice first on a beater guitar.
Should there be tension or no tension on the strings? If I turn it once, how much should I wait if I need to do another adjustment? Hope anyone can share some helpful hints, it would be much appreciated! |

I did it once a few years back... too infrequent to have much of a strategy; just did a little research online. Seemed to work, or at least, do no harm.
As victim instrument was Taylor, I used their guidance - first link below. Paul https://www.taylorguitars.com/suppor...od-adjustments https://www.premierguitar.com/articl...eck_Adjustment http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/r.../truss-rod.php

Are you having a problem with the guitar, or is the action too high? More information about why would be helpful.

Well, I play fingerstyle and plugged in mostly, and like to have a straight neck for playability purposes. The guitar in question currently has standard neck relief.
Also, thanks a lot for the Taylor adjustment links! |

On most guitars, the truss rod is tightened to reduce relief, not loosened. I normally adjust under tension....mainly because the results are instantaneous. Loosening the strings helps if the neck needs a lot of adjustment to reduce relief, but it does create some delay in settling. Minutes, not hours or days, usually.

Adjusting a truss rod is a very simplistic process.
Typically we do it whilst the instrument is strung up and in tune. If during the truss rod adjustment you here a cracking sound or it feels extremely tight, then you need to stop and seek further help from an experienced person, adjusting a truss rod beyond its capabilities can result in breakage and it's a relatively big job to repair. Standard truss rod adjustments are clockwise to reduce relief and bring it to a backbow, anti clockwise to add relief. I say standard truss rod adjustments as I have found many guitars where the person has fitted the truss rod in upside down. Steve
