Longest:
Uh...that depends. I bought my Martin 12 String in 1980 right around this time of year. That's right at 38 years. However, I inherited my dad's Guild F-20 which he purchased before my birth. Calculating from my birth, it's been a part of my family for 59 years. Shortest: I had an Alvarez 12 String that I traded in on the Martin 12 String. I bought it in 1978 and kept it about a year and a half (give or take a few months). I've only ever gotten rid of two guitars. The Alvarez and a Hagstrom Electric that I owned about 7 or 8 years. EDIT: I'm not counting the new Martin GPCRSG in shortest, even though I've only had it a few months because I still own it and will likely own it for several years.

Longest - My Adirondack/Koa Kinscheff High Noon. I got this in sometime in 1999 and still have it.
Shortest - Some might find this blasphemous, but believe it or not it was a Cedar/EI Rosewood Olson guitar. This was before they got REALLY expensive, and I bought it thinking it was going to be my HOLY GRAIL. I knew from the onset that this guitar didn't do it for me. I think I had it maybe a month...... And then I traded the Olson for the Kinscherff mentioned above, and the guy gave me $3,000 in addition to the Kinscherff.......and I got the High Noon and it was nirvana from the first strum!! Plus I had $3K back in the bank...........

Longest would be the one I have now. I think I bought it in 2006. The shortest was a commission from a private builder. One year in gestation, 4 days in shipment and less than 2 days in my hands before I gave it away. You could say I commissioned it for someone else.

At this point, 37 years. I have had my 1980 Guild D50 since new in 1981. It was a college graduation gift from my mom and I will never part with it. The shortest is my 2014 Taylor 814ce, which I have no intention of replacing.

Interesting thread. Thanks to the OP.
Longest for me is my 1975 D-35 12 string; going on 43 years. I did a ton of yard work for numerous neighbors over a couple of summers to buy that guitar new when I was 16 y.o. Shortest was a a custom I ordered a few years ago with great expectations but knew it wasn’t for me after the first few days. Took me about a month to get rid of it.

I bought my first guitar as a sophomore in college-a brand new 1973 Yamaha FG 200. 45 years later, I’m still playing it today in average 25% humidity LOL. Tomorrow I buy my 2nd guitar, a very nice Martin.

Longest the Levin in my Signatures, parents bought it for me 48 years ago!
Shortest was a bum Greven L00 I got right here in the AGF classifieds. I knew in 24 hours it was going back to the seller. More important are the others! Three in my signature, plus the Levin, will stay in my family. Thx |

Longest: Westerly Guild D55 I got in ‘91 and still have.
Shortest: used Voyage Air I thought I’d travel with. I’d always look at on the way out the door to the airport and say ‘nah...next trip’. Sold it to a guy that really wanted it about a year and a half after I got it. It was a cool experiment. |
