Mic position comparison
I was cruising the "Sound on Sound" forum and ran across this:
"The 'Recording Secrets' Library Of Microphone Positions: Acoustic Guitar" http://www.cambridge-mt.com/rs-lmp-acgtr01.htm It's a "library of mic positions" for acoustic guitar recording, consisting of a number of recordings using the same mic model, an SE4 SDC. Multiple mics were positioned in front of the player who then used three different guitars, a Taylor, an Art & Lutherie, and a Huss and Dalton. Some of the Taylor tracks were done with added reflective surfaces and some with added absorption. There are 121 (based on a quick count) different sample clips to compare, if you're feeling up to the challenge. Fran

For the easily bewildered, be sure to read the very well-written Sound On Sound article on recording of acoustic guitar suggested as further reading:

Thanks for the link. Results are in line with what one would expect.
The range of sounds is much more narrow in single mike recordings (all have that rather thin phasey sound) than is available in stereo recordings. In both the stereo examples the mikes are placed close together. So much depends on the room acoustics. In my room some of my best recordings have come about using unusual mike positions.

Just for fun and as an experiment I combined the mono recording of Mike B, Guitar 3 in the first group
http://www.root.cambridge-mt.com/Sit...SH_MidCard.mp3 with the mono recording of mike E, guitar 3 in the second group http://www.root.cambridge-mt.com/Sit...la_ClsCard.mp3 One mike pan hard left, the other hard right. So here is the stereo two mike (spaced pair) result, first raw and then repeated with some Aether reverb added. http://www.dcoombsguitar.com/Misc/AGFJuly.mp3 ----------------

You know what's interesting to me about this? No matter the mic position, the guitar and the player sound like the guitar and player. Not that there are differences because there are. But not as much as I would have guessed.
