For steel-string acoustics, I’m perfectly happy with my Martin 0-16NY, and my Emerald X20.

Obviously, on any good guitar you can do both finger picking and strumming but having guitars that bring out the best in each of those techniques is ideal.
Fortunately, I have examples of both of these in the guitars that I play.

For me it would be my Martin 000-18 and my Zager.

I have two acoustics at the moment, they are a Gibson J-45 Original 50s and an Adamas 1687-8 GT.

I can cover a lot of ground with these two.

I'd keep my Santa Cruz D PW mahogany. The second might be a SCGC H 13 or a forties LG2. Maybe I'd employ my advanced age plan and find a 20s 00 18. I think I'm a good five years away from that though.

The time is past needing to get hearing aids though. Perhaps my entire view of rosewood will change once I can hear sparkle again. LOL

Martin D-18 Authentic 1939 or any good D-18 variant from pre-war through today really liked the D-18v neck

Gibson J-45/50 standards, banners, cs banners, 50’s 60’’s vintage or any flavour through the years

Both guitars I own and took me many years and a lot of turnover in guitar brands, models and price ranges to find two kinda affordable models that had the sound and playability I’ve been searching for.

I already own more than two. Each one fits a particular knitch for me. Please don't ask to pick only two.

It would be near impossible for me to have only two. It would cause me great distress to get rid of so many great instruments. If I had to pick two under threat of death, I would probably keep the new J-45 Custom shop with bear claw Engelmann and Koa back and sides and my flamed out cherry sunburst Les Paul R0 Historic.

Oh wait, that's what I already have.
I love this! A cheap suit serenader after my own cheapass heart!❤️

My cheap & keep faves are my $250 Dean 7 string “Performer” flattop*, and my $650 extended range, 8 string multi-scale fan fret “Agile” Baritone. The Dean goes high, the Agile goes low.

*after about $800 of upgrades, the Dean is no longer “cheap” anymore. Concert quality, in fact.

N.B.; For purpose of this survey I am sacrificing a good Classical and a pretty good but ordinary sounding steel string. I hope the OP appreciates this.
