I'm not a fan of that approach and don't use it on my own instruments, but if somebody else wants to I honestly don't care either way.

It's none of MY business what they do....

Saw a rig with this setup on YouTube tonight. Cringed automatically. Followed by inner dialogue about it being none of my business. Still u.g.l.y.

FWIW, back in the day we did that because there was a general belief that if your string broke at the saddle (which of course it never did) you would have plenty of extra string to use to just somehow (????) attached the ball end again and then tune back up. But secretly we all thought it looked cool. Someone who was good at it could get just the right diameter of the coils and somehow make them lie flat so they weren't sticking up. But I never mastered that. I still have an occasional student who shows up with coils on their old guitar. The coils don't bother me as much as the guy who showed up with the tiny, petrified monkey hand danging from the headstock!

It was what most people did in the 60s when they wanted to look cool.
There was also the ability to use the coils to splice a broken string together.
Strings were expensive on pocket money.

I used my needle-nosed pliers to bend mine in the shape of a triangle.

Back when I was still "under the influence"

Well I think its an issue. How can we allow individuals to choose which way to bend their strings, they are clearly twirled the wrong way!!!

Actually it makes me nostalgic for an earlier time when I used to admire my older brother's Martin. Usually seen with a hootenany strap and an elastic capo...

Its very practical. You can bait your headstock and snare small varmints for your dinner.

The other "cool" thing I recall is impaling your cigarette on a cut string butt as you did you number.

I don't care for it and wouldn't do it on my guitars but if someone wants their guitar that way it doesn't bother me?

To each his own.
I never have enough string left over to do this, even if I wanted to.

I think it is a bad look. Lazy. Kind of like when I see people walking around in public in pajamas, lazy!

The odd time folks have medical reasons for the pjs in public and I certainly understand that. But to the rest, LAZZZZY!
