Default Acoustimax clipping indicator

I just acquired a BBE Acoustimax sonic maximizer pre-amp.

I plugged my guitar with the K&K mini pickup into it. The K&K is a pretty hot pickup but I can't get the gain clipping light to come on even when the gain is turned up to 10. Is this normal? I'm under the impression that you should play the guitar hard until it lights and then back it off some.

The instruction manual says nothing.

Hi,
Unfortunately I don't have answer to your concerns but I have another question

How do you like sound of your K&K via BBE?

Regards,
Marek

I don't have an opinion yet. I just got it and haven't had a chance to dial it in. So far it seems good but I need to play with it a bit more tonite.

OK. I wonder how you would rate it connected to PA.

My experience is that the BBE Acoustimax is an under-utilized preamp for SBT-style pickups, like the K&K, that are fantastic but prone to muddiness. The features are effective and the Sonic Maximizer cuts out the muddy midrange.

I played around a couple of hours tonight.

Going into a Loudbox Mini, the two K&K equipped guitars sound very good. I've managed to get the mids toned down. The maximizer portion enhances the treble and bass in a pleasant way but one has to be careful not to over do it. More isn't better.

I tried another guitar with a LR Baggs M1 passive. It works well with the equalizer but to me, not so well with the maximizer. Even with the settings on the maximizer portion turned right down, it's still seems to be too much but I'm still experimenting.

I did get the K&K's to clip after all. Short hard strums. I keep the gain at the 2.00 o'clock position. With the M1 passive, I can turn the gain on full with no clipping.
