I primarily use Reaper and a Focusrite 2i2.
Best thing you can do to learn Reaper is to go through the tutorial videos by Kenny Gioia in order, starting with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzw5xwpcCJs I recommend against a Focusrite 2i2 if there is any possibility of using something with a hot pickup. It doesn't have a pad button and you may not be able to record without clipping unless you use a DI box. The 2i4 is the next model up in this series and it does have a pad button. The Focusrite drivers are stable, their low-end mic preamps are well-respected, and their plugins are nice. |

I've done full orchestra recordings at 192k at 32-bit with USB interfaces with plenty of processing headroom.

Pulled the trigger on the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 tonight. I did take a hard look at the UA Apollo Thunderbolt AI and it was very highly recommended by my Sweetwater sales rep but I think the benefits for my use do not justify the additional cost plus I think the Scarlett will be a bit more user friendly for this recording newbie. The feedback on this thread was very helpful so thanks to you all for the advice so far.

Probably the right choice. You get to gain experience with some decent kit and can always upgrade over time if need be.
Thunderbolt is probably the future and will become cheaper. I’m still happily using FireWire (which can work over Thunderbolt with an adaptor)

Reverb
Nice setup Martin Maniac. I see you are using Quantum Leap Spaces reverb. That is a nice reverb but my two current favorites are Relab LX480 and LiquidSonics Seventh Heaven.

The Lava Lamp is a newer unit that's been modded with a rattle can gold paint job. Gotta have a Lava Lamp.
