Songs to a Seagull.........debut album by Joni Mitchell
Red Headed Stranger...... this one put Willie Nelson on the label. Lauryn Hill Unplugged 2.0...............even though her fans wanted a more commercial album and the critics hated it, this is the best work by Lauryn Hill ever put out by a major record label.

There are three people that I love to hear when they are singing solo.
John Denver Gordon Lightfoot Nanci Griffith I also loved to hear Utah Phillips and Rosalie Sorrels. I don't know how many of you would know who ther were though.

I saw Nanci many times in the early days solo with her old Guild dread......it really was pretty magical. And she was so darn cute......Poet in my Window is definitely desert island/rockin' chair collection stuff for me.

I love the live stuff Jonathan Coulton does. Sure it is math rock and nerd core but it has strong writing and catchy melodies.

Kate MacLeod's "Trying to Get it Right" album gets it 100% right.

Plenty of good suggestion thus far, but to be honest this is a rather tormenting question, because in the end there is no replacement for taking in a live show. The truly great performers are in their element on stage, feeding off of an audience and vice versa. I've seen many of the artists mentioned already in this thread and countless others and haven't found any recorded works that come close to matching the experience of attending the live shows.

WHAT? Nobody has mentioned Mississippi John Hurt? Best EVER, beyond doubt. End of story. (Don't need mindless babble from the back of the room....)

Saw John Hiatt a couple years ago. Just him and an acoustic guitar (he used an electric for just a couple songs). It was amazing.
