Default Downsizing my home studio...

I live in a 2 bedroom manufactured home, for the past twenty-three years, I had my home studio set up in the smaller bedroom. Over the years I collected a lot of equipment and a lot of junk I don't really need but was taking up space. Lots of clutter.

Well I met a nice beautiful Italian woman with a 5 year old son, she's talking about moving into my place in a month or two. We need the smaller bedroom for her son. So I'm dismantling my current studio and setting up a bare bones studio in the master bedroom. I'm planning on using just the best equipment I have connected to my computer, and do all "in the box" recording. I'm setting up Yamaha HS 8 monitors, Sennheiser headphones, Focusrite 18i8 interface, a Supro amp, a Boss Katana amp, my Art tube pre-amp and compressor, a couple of mics on desktop mic stands and a couple of guitars. So far I'm loving the new setup plans. This will all be setup on my large long dresser, and a tall heavy wire rack. The new wiring I put in will insure I get quality recordings every time.

I already have all the equipment I need except for a cat 5 LAN cable to connect up the computer, which I've ordered and should be here in a few days. (Groupon has them cheap)

I've already set up the Supro and it sounds fantastic in the new digs.

It's amazing how little equipment I actually need to make quality recordings for my own personal use. Cakewalk's Sonar and some other software I have will provide me with all the computer tools I need.

The rest of the stuff I have will either be sold or put into storage for future use. A lot of stuff will be thrown out as it's just clutter. I have a 8x10' storage shed that I cleaned out and will hold lots of the stuff I no longer need. The truth is, my studio was overdue for a major re-build anyway.

The new girlfriend loves my plans and is very supportive about my music hobby.

If the new girlfriend doesn't work out, I can rent out the smaller bedroom to a border and make some extra cash. So it's all good.

So does anybody else have a similar super small bedroom setup they'd like to post pictures of ???? I could probably get by with a good Zoom recorder, but I like my software and monitors.

My other option was to rent out a building and setup a small pro studio, but that would be silly given the condition of the current music business in this area.

Less is more. I'm downsizing my home studio too. It's the right idea. It allows you to focus on the important stuff like the writing, arranging, and performing your music.

I did this when our second child is born. I've downsized from a 16 channel mixer and audio interface all the way down to a single Tascam Dr-100 mkIII portable recorder and a few good pairs of stereo mics. Oddly enough my recordings sound better than ever, probably because I spend less time playing with gear and more time actually recording!

Thanks. It's so nice to leave all the other junk behind and just use what I actually need.

My room gives me no other choice but to down size. I'm so looking forward to retirement and up-sizing my house. Ten more months.

Nice picture!

There's something about audio hardware in a rack that's just purely beautiful.

The olive unit just above the patchbay is some type of compressor, tube maybe , yes ? And the computer is 4.1 or 5.1 ?

Yes, it's a JDK Comp-R22. JDK is a non-tube API offshoot. I rarely use it. I really only use compression on the way in if something I'm singing or playing has an exceptionally wide dynamic range. My new Hendy DaVinci has a comp built into the unit so that may become my go-to in those situations.

My Mac is an early 2008 8-core machine. It has maxed out RAM and SSD drives, so it handles things pretty well but I'm starting to get some popping issues which I think are firewire related. I'm hoping to hold out until Mac comes out with the new Mac Pro design in 2018 but I really do need a new computer. The problem with the trashcans for me is they have no PCIe slots for my UAD cards.
