Vintage DeArmond soundhole pickups pros/cons
Hi, I’m looking for some input on the famous dearmond soundhole pickups as used by lightning Hopkins, Elmore James etc. I play a hard driving rhythm in a rockabilly band, I was considering putting a dearmond in one of my guitars (sigma dst 1) to get a more electric tone. My concerns are that I play pretty hard, do they move around a lot? And do I need a separate preamp for them. Any input feedback is appreciated

I know it's not the style you're thinking of, but I used a DeArmond 220 in a cowpunk band. It's a humbucker from the late 70s. Has a spring loaded mounting bracket that holds it very tight. I plugged into a DOD FX10 Bi Fet preamp into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Sounded great!

I have one that I once used while gigging, I've had it since around 1980. For your use, I'd think they'd work great. It's more of a hollow-body electric guitar voice than unamplified acoustic guitar voice, but for roots rock, that's the thing.
I plugged straight in to a regular Fender Princeton electric guitar amp. Seemed to have plenty of gain without a preamp. I believe it's a single coil, but for that it's not a low output pickup. The spring loaded clips are very stable. Mine has the roller volume knob that I kept hitting with my pick, so there's been tape over it for decades.

One of the newer ones will work. I have the A-345c and it has more of an electric sound than acoustic. Volume control and adjustable polepieces. Decent output, tough sounding pickup. A preamp will give you even more punch.

..i have a late fifties compensated B model that sounds fantastic...it fits snug and the volume wheel actually adjusts the tone a bit too so theres some versatility...i've had mine for about twenty years in 5 or 6 different guitars....its not picky about strings...particularly killer for slide guitar playing...
