Default Peggy White Premier Model African BW & Italian Spruce Build Thread

We’ve got a new build in the works! Peggy White, a Canadian luthier who has studied under such masters as Sergei de Jonge, Linda Manzer, and Michel Pellerin, is becoming a new and exciting addition to the DG family.

This is a project that Peggy’s embarking on in an effort to explore new and exciting rosette ideas, and she’s decided to apply that to her Premier model with a 15 1/2” lower bout, African Blackwood back and sides, and Italian Spruce top. See below for the first glimpses, and for some commentary from Peggy about her aesthetic choices.

- African Blackwood Back & Sides

- Italian Spruce Top

- Mahogany Neck

- 15.5" lower bout

- 25.5" scale length

- bone saddle / nut

- ebony fingerboard / bridge

- 14 fret neck joint

- two-way adjustable truss rod

- 1 3/4" nut width

- 2 1/4" string spacing at bridge

- Gotoh 510 precision tuners

- Hiscox Artist Series hardshell case

Peggy: "Over the last couple of years, I've been thinking about custom rosette designs inspired by my favourite artist, Kandinsky. I have had conversations with Linda Manzer, Michi Matsuda and Michel Pellerin, regarding these designs and how to best implement them. The first one has come to life in the shop of Michel Pellerin during my six-month mentoring session with him. These rosette designs can be custom ordered and will be one of a kind on each instrument. This rosette is African Blackwood with Indonesian Rosewood and Ebony inlayed into it."

Peggy: "A mahogany inner backstop is being glued."

Peggy: "Maple reinforcement strips are glued on before the back braces go on."

Peggy: "Back braces are on and carved!"

Peggy: "Since I've been in Michel's shop, this has become one of my favourite things to do: carving the braces and the X brace cap. Braces are made with Sitka spruce and the X brace cap on this guitar is made from Black Acacia."

Peggy: "A sealer has been applied and the binding channels have been routed and are ready for binding. This gives a close-up view of the Kandinsky-inspired rosette."

Peggy: "Ebony binding with maple and black/white/black purling. Now, time for cleanup!"

Peggy: "Binding is cleaned up on the back showing ebony binding with maple purling."

We'll continue to post updates as the build progresses and it gets closer to being listed on our site. Stay tuned!

I love the rosette - I'm a big Kandinsky fan as well. The whole guitar looks fantastic - looking forward to watching this come together!

Here are a few more shots of bindings and the end graft.

Peggy: "A close up of the back strip, again using ebony and Indonesian Rosewood."

Peggy: "One of the things I love about working in a shop with other luthiers is the brainstorming that happens. I wanted something different for the end strip. Michel Pellerin suggested taking the ebony into the top slightly. I was really happy with how this concept turned out."

Peggy: "A closeup of the end strip."

Peggy: "Full view of the top."

Echo that. This is simple, elegant and refreshingly original.

The ebony detail in the top is really neat. I also really like how you start the taper on the X-brace, and the hardwood cap on the X.

I love the Rosette design and the artistic details you're carrying throughout the design. Very very nice work! I maybe see the Kandinsky influence a little but I think your design work stands on its own.
