For body style, I'd go with a dread, but it would seem that I am in the minority.

Ok, first vote is over. Curly Red Eucalyptus is the winner! I'll give a little longer on the depth vote: standard, deep, or wedge.

But let's talk scale length...

Vote #3:
Long scale - 25.4"

Or

Short scale - 24.9"

I would love to accommodate more alternate scales, but time is short and I already have these fretboards cut. Let's go.

Body depth: Standard depth
Scale: long (25.4" scale)

I'm curious: What are the tonal properties of Curly Red Eucalyptus back and sides? Where does it sit on the Rosewood-Mahogany-Maple continuum?

Ed, I'm not 100% sure. This will be my first time building out of the stuff. If I had to guess by luthier's intuition based on how it feels, then maybe a little like Rock Maple or Sapele or even Bubinga? The Eucalypt family of woods has a pretty amazing variety of density. Just my first impressions are that this is a dense wood. Much heavier than mahogany or walnut, but it has a glassy tap to it. I was expecting something much softer than what it is. I wish I knew the exact species, but I just got to go on what I got. I doubt it will have that "Rosewood" sound, but it should be like other denser non-Rosewood tonewoods.

Also, just for clarification in case anyone misses out on what votes are happening, I'm going to be continually updating the first post of this thread to make sure you can find out what's going on. I'll show what votes are in progress and what has been decided.

Current votes are:
Body depth -
Wedge - 7
Deep Body - 5
Standard - 3

And scale length:
Long - 3
Short -1

Thanks for following!

I missed the wood vote, but I would have voted for the winner!

#2 Wedge
#3 Long Scale

Looking forward to following and helping out.

Ooh I didn't know there was a Manzer wedge option. I change my vote to wedge

What, no fanfret option?
I have always preferred long scale, but recently started liking short, so I'm going to go with short scale.

Is it safe to assume you are doing a 14fret?

Reason I ask... I tend to prefer long scale on 14fret guitars, but short scale on 12/13 fret guitars.

Ok, day one is fully under way. Here's what I'm doing currently...

Nothing like the boss being gone to really turn up those feelings of responsibility and work ethic. Anyone have some cookies to share?

Actually, like I said, today is primarily a parts day trying to prepare for this wonderful creation you're designing. I'll have some more votes coming soon on more aesthetic choices, but for now, I'm ending the body depth vote as it seems that the Manzer wedge approach is pulling away. That should be a fun experiment. Keep voting on scale length. For now, let's consider this a 14 fretter. OM's don't easily accommodate 12 frets without some adjustments that will slow the build. Fan frets are great, but I just checked, and you're not paying me quite enough to up this C&D model to multiscale.

Here's the back and sides cut to shape before bracing/bending.

Keep up the good work.

I normally expect a Blizzard in that shot, way to mix it up and always keep em guessing.

Long scale here....

Ok. Vote #4!

Binding material:

We have some Red Gum binding that has a little different look. I can't guarantee that it is the same species, but it was sold as the same. Also pictured is some Moradora that we bought at a now defunct local wood store. It is a dark brown reminiscent of Macassar Ebony, but it's interlocking grain gives it a different appearance. One thing to note is that there is no side purfling on our C&D models, so it will look similar to these pictures from the side.

Red Gum:

Quartersawn Maple:

Moradora:

I would like to get this decided by tomorrow.
