CBC Radio's "Best Guitar Riff Ever"
As part of their month-long celebration of the guitar, CBC has a "best riff" poll that you might find interesting.....mostly electric, of course, but still....
So far, Layla (original Derek & Dominos version) is just edging out All Along the Watchtower (Hendrix version) and Black Dog. http://music.cbc.ca/#/Guitar-Month |

There is no 'riff' in All Along the Watchtower -

After reading the list I was left wondering if the author meant to title it "vote for the most recognizable guitar riff ever"

Exactly! A lot of the choices are not songs with "riffs". And nothing on the list from sabbath? Tony iommi's nickname is "the riffmaster". Oh well

Layla has a great riff, but the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" has to be the best / most familiar riff ever, and "Brown Sugar", "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "B**ch" can't be far behind.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I had no idea they were doing this.
CBC is a funny animal sometimes. They had a special last week on great Canadian musicians and covered; Tom Cochrane Bryan Adams Sarah McLaughlin The Rheostatics Made me realize how incredibly boring Canadian pop music is. I love Canadian music, but I am thinking; James Keelahan Pukka Orchestra Pursuit of Happiness Something very pell mell about CBC and about Canadian pop music. The Guess Who, who I found continually deplorable, rose to great heights. Lighthouse, a bad Blood Sweat and Tears clone band, did well here. And of course Neil Young, who endlessly irritated me with his horrid guitar solos. Although I am Canadian, I find our popular music quite tasteless. But our underground and Indie scene, now thats good stuff. |
