Xotic EP Booster - Revisted
Ok, so, while in the early stages of trial and error with my pedal board, I for a brief time had an Xotic EP Booster ... at the time, I only had guitars with single coil pups (Tele and Strat) and that pedal just didn't seem to do much for them except make things louder ... so, it was sold ...
Well, after getting an LP & a PRS with humbuckers, I was noticing the dark character of the pups in general, especially the neck HB (not that that is bad or anything, just a different pallet). Seemed like there needed to be a little dose of, shall we say, sparkle ... I tried a number of things that seemed to help but my goal was to keep it simple ... I didn't want to mess with amp EQ because I wanted to switch from PRS to Tele w/o too much trouble (and the Tele just sings with where I have the EQ on the DRRI) ... I tried an EQ pedal but that made me want to fool with it all the time and it was a tad noisey ... I tried a different amp channel but that still just wasn't quite "there" ... To make a long story short, I got hold of another Xotic EP Booster to try out ... great little pedal ... the tone coloration is subtle but for humbuckers, it gives me just the right brightness (i.e. sparkle) that I was craving w/o sacrificing the low end fullness ... and, I can just stomp it off when I'm playing the Tele unless I want a little boost ... (how many of you guys have ever done this? Sold something and re-bought the same thing down the road? ... makes me feel a little stupid but I guess I have the excuse that my circumstances changed due to different pup/guitar types)

If you like the EP-Booster you would LOVE the ClinchFX EP-PRE! It does what the Xotic pedal tries to do. The EP-PRE is as close of a replica to the original EP3 Tube Echo preamp as can be built. Page, Beck, Hendrix...they all used the EP3 with the delay turned off which is what the Clinch pedal is, an EP3 with no delay. It blew my Ep-Booster off my board REALLY fast.

I have two versions of the EP Booster, V1 & V2, I think. One notable difference is that the older one sounds relatively darker than the newer one.
The v2 has a brightness switch inside that can be turned off. But never fiddled with it because I like it just as it is. |

Scriptor, glad to hear that you found something that worked for your HB gitars, which didn't work for your single coil guitars. As far as whether I've sold something only to buy it again ... no. I have had gear which I didn't use only to pull it out again years later and found an application. Like my TS-9 Tubescreamer, worked great for leads on my Les Paul.

I have a good friend who is a professional and uses one along with a volume pedal to go between normqal and solos. The booster goes on when he needs just a little more. Seems to work great.

I adjusted the internal switches ... turned off the additional boost but left on the brightness switch ... this seems to work best for me ... there is plenty enough boost for my purposes w/o the extra from the switch being on ... I like the brightness on as it seems to add some clarity for the HB pups, particularly the neck pup ...

I had an Echoplex that I loved but in the '90s, allowed my buddies to tell me it was archaic. I sold it and bought a digital delay. I was never happy with that so I ended up buying another Echoplex.
