Default "My Bad!" origination

(Disclaimer: Some of you will probably find this as "old news," but I just found out about it and thought that it was pretty neat, so I thought I'd share.)

I thought this was a pretty cool story I heard on the radio last week.

You know that phrase "My bad" that some people say whenever they make a mistake? Come to find out, this phrase came from Manute Bol, a former NBA player from Sudan. Due to his lack of command of the English language, whenever he would make a mistake during practice or during a game, he would say the phrase "My bad" as opposed to "My fault" or "I'm sorry." Other NBA players picked up and started saying it, thus the phrase was born.

Happy Monday!

Thanks for the info. Though now it seems to have moved to a phrase of self forgiveness as in if you screw up and say "my bad" it doesn't matter.

Of course. Just like saying "no offense" makes what you're about to say ok. Isn't language wonderful?

"My bad" is just one of those phrases I could never hear myself using. Same with phrases like "cool beans."

Did not know that and that's cool. It's pretty recent too, which I didn't know.

A fact that blew my mind a little while ago was learning that the high five started in the late 70's:

I thought people were high fiving in the 20's. There were no high fives then?

Interesting. Manute was a big deal (pun intended) here in Connecticut, and did a lot of good work in his life, but I had never heard that he invented that saying!

Interesting how phrases come into common use
As I understand it the phrase Heavy Metal was coined by a DJ in NYC trying to describe the music of Jimi Hendrix .
Something along the lines of "Like heavy metal hitting the ground"

So did he say that before the "heavy metal thunder" (in Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" ) ?

Note : It was just something I read so I am not 100 % certain of it's accuracy .
However, it was 1966 when Hendrix's gained notoriety and the release of Born to be Wild was 1968, so I would think probably yes .

Hi Kev, I had a quick look at Google ( or as today's students would say "did some research" ) and found this article ,
which still remains uncertain about the origins.

http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Heavy_metal

So, it remains an enigma wrapped in a mystery .....

Personally, I never thought of Jimi as H.M , he was much more melodic ,, Zep, yes , that'd be more like it I think.

Cool.

I'm not a fan of "my bad," in general, but now that I know it's Bol-related I might give it a pass.

Yes I must have read this version "He states that "…it [heavy metal] was a term originating in a New York Times article reviewing a Jimi Hendrix performance," and claims the author described the Jimi Hendrix Experience "…like listening to heavy metal falling from the sky." The precise source of this claim, however, has not been found and its accuracy is disputed."

Which I am thinking is more about what was at that time the new sonic's Hendrix was able produce, and not about what is now perceived as being a specific genre
