There happen to be two for sale recently in our classifieds. (Not affiliated with the sellers.)
This Koa Thompson is at the target price. Seems very nice.

Used is your best value. I had one Colby Horton guitar come through a couple years ago and it was absolutely unbelievable - I was exceedingly impressed, especially considering hte relative inexperience of the builder to some of the other builders I worked with and the low price point. Hard to make judgments from a sample of one, but MAN was that thing killer-sounding.

I'm curious...what was the body size and wood combo?

Here's the Horton: http://www.guitarmatch.com/IndividualGuitar-htn1.htm.

I had a guitarist friend over at a time when I had a number of guitars on hand ranging from a $10k brazilian Collings Clarence White to a number of less expensive boutique builders. He didn't really know the market for any of the guitars and picked the Horton out as the best of the lot...ironically, it was the cheapest one I had at the time.

Yep. That's one of the ones I was referring to.

And here is the other one;

Look out for your jaw when it hits the floor, but you couldn't believe it was 18 in the link. It wasn't, it was 17. Look at the photograph of the sticker inside the sound hole. Mine is 18. Looking at it right now. Secretely I'd like to think mine is that much better, but from the date it's probably from the same batch even thought it's a different model with different tonewoods. Regardless, I'm not sure what number he's on now, but considering where he was in '07 I can't imagine what 50 is going to sound like.

I'll let you know when it gets here

Mine should be somewhere in the 35-50 range, if I were guessing.

TONS of choices for top notch guitars with the amount of money you're talking about. Great examples are mentioned above. You do need to decide on what guitar configuration you want...orchestra, dreadnaught, jumbo, slope, cowboy style, etc. Then go from there. A lot of guitars that were $4000.+ new are selling for $2500. used.
