Back at it again
It's been awhile since my last posting, Joel has completed some other work and we have fleshed out some more details so he is now back on my build. Starting with the back getting the bracing ready -
The maker's mark - Bracing glued into position - And the horizontal braces capped with Rocklite - The braces will still need to be trimmed, Joel says this will be done at the time of assembly with the sides. Nice to see the figure/grain on the back after the OO-R shape has been cut out. Only seeing the body shape drawn on the joined halves doesn't give the full affect of how the actual body will look, so it's nice to finally see. Next up should be the top bracing

Thanks, I'm looking forward to the final results. There's still a couple details yet to be shown that should be interesting. Quote:

Interlude
Early in the build process with Joel I had asked him to see if he could add some Japanese symbols to my guitar. He was very accommodating to the idea, yet wanted to ensure that this was done well and that the placement would enhance the overall design. We discussed various areas to place these symbols and finally decided on utilizing the inside of the guitar. What was lacking was what medium to use and how best to apply them. As these symbols are usually created using calligraphy, I felt that whatever we did, needed to reflect that these were being drawn by hand.
One option was to have something drawn up on paper and applied to the inside (painting directly on the inside did not appeal to me). This while hand drawn, did not have the permanence that say an inlay might have. And while an inlay was an option, it just did not seem to be the best answer for what I wanted. As discussions continued, Joel suggested that another option would be to have the symbols burned into the wood. This would be in keeping with a "hand" application and synergistic with his makers mark, which he burns onto the inside centre support strip. Brilliant, yet the first test pieces Joel tried did not meet the standards that he felt was required (these luthier's can be pretty particular when it comes to adding things to their builds ... lol). This brings us to the best part of my story. Luckily the luthier community has a broad skill set and is very supportive. So a friend of Joel's, Zachary Lefebvre of Treehouse Guitars, now enters the picture. As many may already know (or should see for themselves), Zach burns beautiful pieces of artwork on wood (for guitars and other projects) and seemed the perfect person to help out with this part of our project. A quick call and Zach was on board as our wood burning consultant and application specialist. Maybe not as challenging as some of his other work, but i was very appreciative of the delightful final result. As pictures make the point best, I have included some of the "work in progress" pics. Here are the symbols I wanted added. Joel supplied some of his Spruce material to Zach to ensure a match with the existing guitar strip and here the preliminary symbols have been drawn on the Spruce strips - Partial image burned in - The final pieces - Positioning on the back, top area - Positioning on the bottom section - All-in-all, Joel and I are very satisfied with the final outcome. Joel also enjoyed working with Zach on this feature and wanted me to mention this in our build thread. In his own words "... let everyone know how much I think of Zach as a friend and an artist. It was a true pleasure to collaborate with him". While a seemingly simple feature to implement at the beginning, the effort and work ended up being much more then I had imagined. The final result for me is I have the work of two fine young luthiers on my build, a symbol and memory of their collaboration that I will think about fondly, when playing my guitar

Aw, this is fantastic! I can't tell you how happy I was when Joel asked me if I wanted to be a small part of this project. I don't normally do pyrography/woodburning for other luthiers simply because it is a signature of mine; this project was an exception. Joel is a great luthier and an even better person. Thanks for agreeing to bring me on board for this one, IBKuz!! Cheers! -Zach

Now, back to the build
With my interlude time over, Joel can get back to our build. Here is the finished back, kinda liking the Rocklite strapping on top of the braces. It ties together the spalting lines, burned sections, and black lines of the kerfing for me -
I'm not sure why, but I have always really enjoyed seeing the inside details of the guitar over and above the fact that the structure is so important for the sound. I have always enjoyed the hidden details in woodworking, a butterfly joint on the backside of a picture frame; the dovetail on the sides of the drawer body. Details that are never really seen yet are beautiful in their execution, I always look at these as they usually are an indication of the builders intent (I wonder what my wood projects say about me ...). Here the back is joined to the sides - The upper Water symbol and edge details - The lower Earth symbol - Here a coat of shellac sealing the inside gives a first hint of the colours that the Manchinga will have under finish -
