Default Review: Alto Trouper Powered Speaker/ PA

I promised a review on this item and I have had a cuople of days to evaluate it so here goes.

1. Build and Quality A
2. Connections A
3. Sound B+
4. Power A+
5. Ease of Use A
6. Portability A

Pole-stand mountable

Hook up is quick and easy. I haven't tried connecting my I-Pad to the Bluetooth function yet so I can't comment on that portion. The unit is rated at 200 watts peak and it's plenty loud with clean, clear vocal reproduction. Sound dispersion is very good and there is sufficient bass reproduction for an acoustic guitar, in fact, more than sufficient. I gave it a B+ on the sound because my acoustic with a Baggs Anthem SL through this needs some EQ as in an acoustic guitar amp. The Alto gives you bass and treble EQ and for my setup, it's not enough for the guitar, but it is for vocals. I hooked it up through my Yamaha MG 10 XU which has effects as well and bingo...sounds great!
If your looking for a small to medium sized venue powered system (as I was) at an affordable price, this is a strong contender. It does not have a bag or carrying case, but the built-in handle makes it easy to carry and at 22 lbs., it's pretty easy. Overall, it is as advertised, which is a good thing.
My buddy in a duo has one ordered and we plan to use them in stereo as a pair which can be accomplished wirelessly with the Bluetooth function; no connecting cable needed
Here's a link to the sight I bought mine from with all the specs and details:

I'd love to hear a live video of this being used.

Played out with the Trouper yesterday and first off sorry, no recording was made due to technical difficulties. In summary, the Alto Trouper performed like a trouper. Through my Yamaha MG10XU board with two microphones, two acoustic guitars and a mandolin. We were in a room that held 30-40 and
had plenty of headroom left unused. My partner in crime raved about how good we sounded. I am fighting a cold so my stuffed up head and ears didn't afford me the opportunity to hear clearly, but he's pretty critical so I'll trust his judgement. We still have another one on the way so I think we're probably good in a much larger venue if need be. They are still on sale for $149 if anybody is interested.

I'm currently using the same board into an Alto 10" powered speaker for small jobs (and bigger speakers for others). Any particular advantage to the Trouper over just a regular powered speaker? Other than the bluetooth?

Probably sound dispersion and less boxy sounding since the Trouper is a narrow columnar design with three 6 -1/2"
Drivers and a tweeter on top. By sound dispersion I am mainly thinking for acoustic instruments and vocals. These speakers produce plenty of bottom for an acoustic guitar. I assume you mount yours on a stand as we do. My partner and I both noticed that once we got the Trouper up on the stand the sound carry was significant in the room even at relatively low volume. The only thing I wish they had is a mid EQ control for guitar, but we run through a small mixing board like yours anyway so it's not a big deal for us.

Here is a video of me using a single Alto Trouper over the weekend for solo acoustic. I thought it sounded great. This was a BUSY restaurant with over 100 loud people milling around and having a great time.

Gear is Yamaha APX1000 with SRT pickup system (love it)
Zoom G3 (effects/looper)
iPad for setlists/lyrics
A&H Zedi10 FX
Alto Trouper (main)
QSC K10 (floor monitor

Thanks rockguitar2000,

On the video, the Alto seems to be very high on the stand.... Was the room very deep?

On the ad video, the tweeter/compression driver is at ear height. Does it influence the sound?

This was a deep room so I wanted the sound to carry over heads. It was a loud rowdy crowd so I don't think it reached all the way to the far side. I'm considering a second one for better dispersion.

Nice work! You inspired me to add With or W/O you to our set list for Friday's gig. It's a St. Patrick's day party. That's about as close as I'll get to playing Irish music!

As good as the troupers sound, pairing them with Alto Truesonic TS212's makes a great setup.

Attachment 1539
Does the TS212 have a pole socket on top for stacking or is the Trouper just standing unattached on top of the TS212?
